Selection and editing of stacked files in Plex Web

Plex supports for stacking files, which allows to combine different version of the same movie in one  common library entry.

I mainly use this feature for having:

  • different localizations (languages) of a movie: Some movies, especially newer ones  - with a lot GCI - has also localized scenes/images and not only differ in sound. This is mostly the case for signs or other story important texts.
  • 2D/3D versions of a movie: 3D movies typically stored side-by-side and thus often has a lower resolution than the 2D version. Also does the 2D version not necessarily have to match one of the views in the 3D video.

In both cases, it is useful to have different versions of a movie available. A third case is to have different quality version of the movie, but since transcoding works great, and movie files needs a lot of space, the storage space can be used in a better way.

Plex Home Theater - at least the OS X version - provides a selection of all stacked files corresponding to the movie, you want to play.

However, the Plex Web does not really support for this feature. The only thing it does, is to indicate how much files are stacked for one movie and to give the possibility to split them (all) apart.

What it should be able to:

  • Select the file before playback.
  • Name or tag the different files to provide a better selection. Background: the textual entries of this selection in Plex Home Theater are either the resolution or the language of the different files, which sometimes works great but most time ends up in a list of equal entries.
  • Spilt a specific file from stack while the remaining stack persists, in case more than 2 files are stacked.

Couple of thoughts. First is, you created the post, so obviously you like it...  :)

Next is, I think there are a few feature requests for this very thing, although maybe not for the reasons you have listed.  Rather than split the votes up on several threads, find the one that most closely matches your own and add your vote "Like" to the first post of the thread.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are requesting...

But, plex web does this now,  under "Settings - > Web -> Player -> Automatically Select Resolution".

Make sure that is unchecked.  When unchecked it will prompt you for which one you want to play.

If I understand the OP correctly, he wants to be able to pick the file name rather than the resolution because he has two or more of the same resolution, only in different languages or different verions (ie. imax vs regular).

I know that is my case.  I have a movie that is imax and another that is regular and both are 720p.  I was thinking of splitting it but that looks lame and redundant if you have three or more.  Better to take advantage of the stack feature, IMO.

OP, take a look at this thread, it has gained popularity and I believe it's what your looking for.  Please vote on it as well if it's fitting.

Early 2021 clean-up:

  • implemented → play version
  • duplicate → multiple cuts (link in post above)
