Server auto-update, Core not Library

Sorry if this has been suggested before, i didn't see it..

It would be nice if Plex auto updated from the central code. I realize this may be a little difficult for Plex pass vs non Plex pass members, but it would be very helpful. Im mainly thinking of applications like Couchpotato and Sickbeard that will track a remote version number and update its code automatically when a new version is available.

Pretty sure I saw that there are plans to make it something like the way PHT auto updates.  It just hasn't been its turn to be worked on yet.

And hopefully never makes it, IMHO....

A server should never ever autoupdate, but be handled by the admin.....

But yes, auto notification, with a single button update would work, just not unattended!

well in PHT you can turn it off so i assume the same would be true.

This. Updating the server should be a conscious decision, made at a point in time when you know things won't be broken (and can roll things back if needed).

And similarly for the bundles updates

I agree with the manual update here. My worst nightmare would be that PMS auto updates just when I am on holiday, and crashes in that process (or waits for a reboot that never comes), leaving me without movies for several weeks.

My update policy is simple: when I update I want ample time to discover it is broken before I go on a business trip or holiday. Signalling an update and do a one-click install would be great, but auto-updating is a no-go area...

Absolutely agree that no silent updates should happen on a server.

Recently a German user reported that his naming scheme (obviously not following the naming convention) was suddenly not working anymore. This was most probably because the agent had been updated without him knowing about. He wasted a lot of time looking anywhere for the problem, he even reinstalled the software a couple times.

If he would have known about the update he could have eventually focused on the real issue right away.

I would suggest stable and beta update alerts, but not auto-update.

I keep checking back here daily for new plex updates. Would be easier to get a desktop alert of a beta release or stable.

A slight oversight: how you would want to be notified? I don't know about other users, but since I use cjmurphs service wrapper I rarely log into the PMS server for much of anything, so a task bar notification would be a bit pointless.

Updating the server should be a conscious decision, made at a point in time when you know things won't be broken (and can roll things back if needed).

I will also contest any silent update function. dj hit that one squarely on the head.

dane22's suggestion of a UIR button to pull & update would be nice for the masses... but as with firmware updates, I would rather see it in the web admin interface (right under the requested "back up database now" button) than the task bar, but this would likely require a move to a solid service offering with changes to the structure to be machine based instead of user based (both of which have been asked for, repeatedly.)

As for notification, what about an email to the main account associated to the server?

That way your not forced to login to the server to be notified.

If this is done, please include the changelog with the update notification. So I will be able to determine how urgently I need to apply the update.

Like, but only if there's also an auto update for the freebsd version. ;-)

I actually like the idea somewhat. I agree that in a server capacity, nothing should ever really automatically update themselves (aside from library additions, which already is a feature). I like the options previous versions of Windows gave for its auto update utility, such as: Automatically Install, Download but do not install, alert on new update available, or none of the above. Personnally I like the auto download but not install option
