Server crashing since upgrade (MacOS, PMS 1.21.3.4021 & 1.21.3.4046)

Hi,

The last 2 server versions I tried seem to have issues for me, upgrading first to x.4021 and then downgrading back to x.4014. Then again to x.4046 and downgrading again to x.4014

In both new versions the server program crashes or quits (disappears from the menu bar and has to be opened again. This is usually during playback of a file, local network.

Downgrading to x.4014 both times resolves the issue and has been rock solid.

Anyone else been experiencing this?

Server Version#:1.21.3.4021 + 1.21.3.4046
MacOS Catalina Version#: 10.15.7

I haven’t seen that before… would you mind sharing your server logs?
Given your server isn’t running after the crash, you’ll need to manually collect them from ~/Library/Logs/Plex Media Server/(just zip/archive the entire folder and upload it here).

I have not seen this behavior but sounds like a Transcoding issue, is it with a particular file or all you try. Screen shot from the dashboard when you first play, would be helpful.

I’m running Big Sur with Version : 1.21.4.4054

Hi tom80H,

I downloaded these immediately after I re-opened the server after the crash last night,

I don’t really know what I am looking at in the logs but to try and add context and from what I can tell the crash happened at 4.04am and there were no logs again until the server restarted at 4.26am?

Now when the crash happened (or rather this is when it stopped playing on the TV) I had been watching it for about the previous 20 mins (nearing the end of a half hour show) which means all this activity was not logged?

Plex server must have “crashed” near the beginning of that episode but let me watch it for a while before the stream died on the client.

I can also add that I am sure the episode in question was started using autoplay, after the previous episode had finished. Client being a 4k Fire TV stick

Many thanks,

Plex Media Server Logs_2021-02-21_04-27-09.zip (3.6 MB)

Hi SE56,

These files generally always direct play, 4K fire stick

Screenshot of the same file/client playing again

Thanks,

Capture

Looks like there’s been some hiccup with the Fire TV that caused the PMS to consider the playback has stopped (paused after little more than 14 minutes in the episode).

Given the gap between the log entries and the remaining progress it seems like you were approaching 30 minutes of pausing. I suppose the crash might be linked to some session clean-up. Need to ask if there’s any known issues with regards to Android TV (in particular on a Fire TV device) and Plex terminating a playback session.

Thanks tom80H, I’ve upgraded 1 server to the latest beta and will keep 1 server on 4014. Both run on identical mac mini hardware.

Will see if I can replicate the behaviour but not great if it killed the server all together due to the client.

Hi, have you got TeamViewer installed? I only ask as my M1 Mac mini PMS kept stopping in the exact way you describe - I removed Team viewer and it has been fine since.

Be worth checking and removing any other remote software from your PMS. Let me know as I am interested to see if Team viewer is the cause.

Hi, I’ve never had TeamViewer installed on this one but I do have a VNC Server from RealVNC.

Interesting if there is a link, if I can replicate the crashes I might stop the VNC server to see if it has any effect, not much else running as it is primarily for Plex

Hi. I do think there is a link with remote software and PMS. I’d stop the VNC service running all together and see what the outcome is. Seen a few posts regarding similar things.

Keep us updated as it might be something for Plex to fix.

I’ve had this happen as well, with the same two releases - but mine has crashed over night, never when playing.

Or - rather - I haven’t had Plex crash but my whole Mac, due to a kernel panic in Plex Media Scanner…

Also on a late 2012 Mac mini with 10.15.7…

Updating to 1.21.4.4079 as I’m typing this.

After those 2 versions, I haven’t had this happen again. also on 4079 and has been fine so far.

Since my problems happened when playing a file I have put it through its paces trying to replicate the fault, playing a file, leaving it on pause for 30 mins, playing again, seeking forward etc and nothing has caused the server to crash.

Still VNC Sever running, which I always have running and had never experienced this problem before those 2 versions, so for me this doesn’t look like it’s the problem.

Something in those 2 versions perhaps, but so far so good, fingers crossed.

Spoke too soon, happened again tonight on 1.21.4.4079. Time for another rollback.

Played a file, no pausing or seeking, just playing, file kept playing about 10 mins after the time the log seems to stop, assume this is what had buffered to the fire tv.

First I knew of it was the movie stopped playing, checked the mac and the server wasn’t running!

Log attached, any ideas what could be causing this?Plex Crash Uploader.log (599 Bytes) Plex Media Server.1.log (5.1 MB)

Well, my Mac mini hasn’t crashed since I upgraded Plex to 4079 - yet…

Since removing and reinstalling the fire tv client application my server crashes have gone away - fingers crossed its permanent.

Ok, now I got another macOS crash in Plex Media Scanner (version 1.21.4.4079):

I’m still on my rollback of 4014 and has been rock solid as has a 2nd identical Mac Mini which was never upgraded past 4014 and it has never had an issue.

I’m reluctant to upgrade again, will 4163 have the same issue as the last 3 upgrades I have tried…

My issue is that PMS crashes but MacOS itself does not, unlike your issue.

I’ve now upgraded to 4163, we’ll see if it keeps crashing macOS…

1.22.0.4163 did not solve my issue…
