Server Currently Unavailable on local network but available on external networks

Server Version#: 1.25.3.5409
Player Version#: 4.69.1

I set a Plex server up so other members of my extended family could access my video collection. Everything had been working fine until the past few days.

Whenever I try to watch a video using the web app + my login on my local network it comes up that the server is unavailable (even on the same computer), but if I login in using the server address it works fine. Other people outside my local network are able to login using their details and watch the videos fine.

Nothing has been changed in the last week (eg setting, hardware etc), so I don’t know what has caused the problem. Can anyone help?

  1. verify that the network connection on Windows hasn’t been reverted to status “Public”. It must be set to “Private”.
  2. Avoid switching between cabled and wireless networks. In fact, operating a Plex server with WiFi is asking for trouble.
  3. Peruse the user manual of your router. Look for settings pertaining to “DNS rebinding protection”. If there are any settings for this, insert the domain name plex.direct into the list of exceptions, for which this protection shall be not active. More Info
  4. Switch the DNS server which your router uses, to one of the tested public options: Google (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1)
  1. Yes it’s private
  2. Not sure what you mean by this as I never mentioned how I connect to the server. The server is connected to the router via a cable if it makes any difference.

I haven’t tried 3 or 4 yet but would the setting suddenly change by their selves as it has been working fine for most of the last 2 years (sometimes the same fault would occur and it would be ok after an hour or so).

1 and 2 were just precautions. I mentioned 2 because I don’t know what your situation looks like.
3 and 4 are probably the more likely ones to help.

Firmware updates on your router are probably not something you’re managing yourself. Many ISPs do that remotely, without notifying their customers.

The same applies to the DNS server and the policies thereof. Some ISPs are impeding services like Plex with their default DNS settings.

Sorted it, somehow the firewall setting on the router had been turn off.
