Server not remembering latest shows watched

Server Version#: 1.14.0.5468-5a0183d2c
Player Version#: 3.77.2

Alright. I have home users enabled and the server is no longer remembering what episode of what show we watched last. Tonight, we went to watch Happy Days and the server said that we were three episodes behind what our hardcopy of the shows we watch said. Hopefully somebody can help us out here. There si an update to the Plex server that I am just about to install, but this problem has been going on over the last few releases of the server.

  1. activate debug logging (not ā€˜verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 5 minutes
  6. fetch log files and attach them here

Or inspect them yourself. Take a look at the Plex Media Server.log file and seek for messages about database corrupt or malformed.
If you find these, you may have to repair your database.

Alright. I’ve been checking off and on this morning, since enabling debug level logging and am not finding corrupt or malformed. :frowning: That would have made this a touch easier.

Are you using the trakt.tv plugin?

Do you regularly jump over to other plex clients and leave the other player in ā€˜Paused’ state?

Are you sure that you are watching the same show always with the same user account?

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with any PLEX plugins. I only play on one computer at a time. If they ever make a cell phone where the screen expands to 12 inches, I’d consider using that. LOL. And as for the same account, yes. Very sure of that.

Which Plex client are you using?

Is the Plex client on the same computer as the plex server?
If they are on different computers, I recommend doing this on every Windows computer that serves as either Plex server or Plex client:

I’m using the Windows client on Windows 10. The actual client version is 3.77.2. And I’ve already turned the power saving junk off for the network card as well as every other part of the computer. With respect, I’ve never seen a change in any of my bills with power saving on. So, I’ve always turned it off as soon as I install windows. Plus there is nothing like having the screen turn off in the middle of a movie anyway. LOL.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I have PLEX Server running on Windows 2012 Essentials R2 on a separate computer from the clients.

Do you perhaps use several browser tabs with the plex app open in them?
Don’t.

Or maybe you still have the plex app open on other devices?
If you leave a plex client open in ā€˜paused’ state, it will send his playback position back to the server, where it may overwrite the ā€˜played’ state for this item.

With the web app, it is important to not leave it in ā€˜paused’ mode.
You must close the player window/Stop playback if you leave the device.
stop_web_app

If you use several Windows user accounts on one machine, make sure that only the currently active user has a plex client open.
I recommend to never use the ā€˜switch user’ ability of Windows. Always log off and then log in the other user account.

Well, I have tried everyone’s suggestions. I’ve searched through log files for keywords that my server is not putting into the log files… corrupt and malformed…

I’ve changed power management settings for my network cards and I have even made sure that I am not using multiple tabs. In fact, I use the Plex Media Player for Windows instead of a web browser.

Still, my server is not remembering what shows/movies we have watched. :frowning: Please help. Tell me I have found a bug or something. I’m getting to the point that telling me just about anything would make me happy.

i’ve been having the same problem the last couple days since the new layout hit roku. episodes i watch seem to become marked unwatched again. not sure if the new layout has issues or if the server is marking things as unwatched when new versions of the files are obtained and replace the old or what is going on. going to pay some more attention to figure out a pattern

Thank you, @duelistjp. I feel much better knowing that I am not alone in this issue. I even went so far as reinstalling the server, and it started forgetting a few days later. Then I tried a repair and the same thing. After a few days, it broke again. Very distressing. That’s why I keep a spreadsheet of all the movies and episodes on the side. LOL

I just wanted to let y’all know that I am still having this problem. I’ve reinstalled the server program on the Win 2012 R2 server I have on-site. I repaired the server program. Delete the home account in question, remade it and am still having trouble with the server remembering where we stopped playing videos. Nothing is working and this is driving me up the wall. Especially the part where I am paying for the service, writing to the developers and am receiving neither a solution nor a response, even. :frowning:

I think this cannot be diagnosed further without looking at actual log files from when you are playing something.

Please repeat the procedure from my my first response above,
but insert step 5.5 where you are actually play a video.

btw, which anti virus software are you using?
Please try to create an exemption in its preferences where you are excluding the Plex data folder from interference.

If your anti virus/personal firewall is performing http/https inspection, turn that off for some time and compare the behaviour of Plex during that time.

I have done everything that has been requested. I ran with logging on, I searched through the logs for ā€œcorruptā€ and ā€œmalformedā€. Neither of those words showed in the logs. As I said before, I’ve tried repairing, reinstalling, etc etc. Nothing is working. As for antivirus, I’m using what is built in to Windows 10/2012. The only two things I have not tried are discontinuing my subscription and tinkering with antivirus settings and firewall settings.

Sorry, I was not after any hints about database corruption this time. Just after the logs themselves.

Do create the exemption of the Plex data folder from virus scans.

I was not sure what specifically you needed from the server logs, so here are all of them. My apologies if they are a wee bit too much. I can’t restart the server at the moment, so couldn’t get fresh logs, but they are current.

I need the playback attempt of the video in those logs.
Did you try to play the video, prior to fetching the logs?

Yes, Otto, I did. All day today it was giving us a hard time. It would say that we did in fact watch episode 14, for example, and then it would start playing episode 12. Even if we take it to the very end of the video, it doesn’t record that. We also tried waiting for it to start the next video and it would still not record that properly either.

Alright. I believe that it was ā€œCharles in Chargeā€ and ā€œGleeā€ that gives us the most trouble.

Sorry, that I didn’t ask earlier:
does it stick if you mark the episode as ā€˜played’ manually?

Did you tell Windows Defender to leave out the Plex data folder from its scans?

Sometimes. It seems to be based on the mood of the server. I feel like this is a case of ā€œghost in the machineā€.

Sorry, Otto. Didn’t see your question about Defender. Yes, I did add the exception to Defender.
