please help me! Im so overwhelmed and my head is hurting trying to figure it out.
I have a regular windows 10 laptop. Im new to plex. I can login to Plex onlne and I also downloaded the windows desktop Plex software but when I try to launch it, it wont open. Or is the web version the same thing? Also it says Server Settings unavailable. ANd under Remote, it says I’m “nearby”. What have I done wrong? Please help me understand.
Did you at any point in this process install the Plex Media Server?
The web app is a player and admin interface for the server – only with an installed server you’ll be able to modify your server settings.
If you did install the server – try accessing it through the locally installed version of the web app:
plex server — indexes your personal media content that you have ripped, and serves that content out to local and remote players/clients
plex client — these are the player apps that can be found for pc/mac/mobile devices/tablets/etc. The clients connect to a server and lets you play your content from any location that has internet access.
could using a VPN prevent it from launching?
I did install the server but when I click on it to launch it just wont. I even reinstalled it. And it installed but just wont launch. I can only access it though the web. I clicked on the links you put and it says “site not secure” …something about the certificate. When I try to go to it anyway, it says 404 not found.
Occasionally that’s a blocker.
As for your VPN – that shouldn’t get in the way when you’re working within your home network. However it might complicate things when you’ll try accessing your server while away from home. There’s a whole bunch of posts on that topic.
When you’re launching the server, it’ll actually only open the locally installed version of the Plex web app… if the server is actually running, it should show up in the Taskbar of your Windows10 (or in the menu bar if you’re on a Mac). Some users have reported issues if they have specific browsers as their default browser that don’t like that kind of triggering. That being said you should still be able to access the server through Plex Web using the given address(es).
I tried to add a library and choose a media folder (my new external drive) and it said my changes could not be saved. Is that because my server isn’t running?
when I click on any of those links you put, it just says 404 Not found. I don’t know what to do.
let’s go there step by step…
Make sure you try accessing the links from a browser on the laptop on which you installed the Plex Media Server.
The symptoms you describe sound like you’re able to access the server (even if it fails to save your new library). Failing to open the given URLs in a browser can mean the server isn’t running (which shouldn’t be the case given you can create a library – kind of) or the server is at least not on the same machine from which you’re trying to use the links.
Can you create a screenshot of the browser window when you navigate to the library creation (including address bar)?
I orginally was given access to a server of a friend, I had to create an account and everything. I think I am going to start from scratch since I don’t have any lirbaries yet. Gonna delete plex account and uninstall the program and start over.
if you are accessing someone else’s server, then you do not need to install or use plex server for yourself, unless you are wanting to watch your own videos.
do not delete your plex account, that is not the problem. You won’t be able to recreate your account if you delete it (from the plex web site).
also, access to your friends server is tied to your account, so if you delete it you won’t be able to access their server.
what happens if you go @ Plex Web and log in with your plex account, if not already logged in.
well we aren’t frends anymore. I used to log in and it would ask me to choose a user and I could see his and then me. But I don’t see his anymore. I created my own account then added his server but his isn’t there anymore. I think the issue might because my computer wont allow an insecure connection.
From what you describe your (former) friend has a Plex Pass and invited you to a feature called “Plex Home”. This goes slightly beyond regular sharing and allows e.g. fast user switching on a TV (what you described as choosing a user).
It appears he/she simply removed you from this setup and is no longer sharing with you.
You cannot re-add someone else’s server to your account unless they re-invite you.
Long story short…
The question will be what you want to do
You can start your own server or just use your own Plex account with Plex’ online media sources (e.g. news, podcasts, web-shows and most recently video on demand).
That being said… I’m with TeknoJunky when it comes to not deleting your account as that’s not the issue/challenge in your equation.
VIctory! I uninstalled the desktop server and reinstalled and ta-da! Not sure what happened but I was seriously gonna have a temper tantrum. And I got my library added. Whoooo hoooooo!
