Server with external usb 6tb hard drives (3)

3 questions about libraries
All my mkv files are on 3 hard drives .

[1] do all media files have to be on the server to make libraries?

[2] if the the drives are partitioned should i just point to the drives or to all the partitions on the drives?

[3] is the library just txt file that points to the drive?

It sounds like you never added the new directories on the new hard drives to your media library? You’ve gone into settings, clicked edit on your video library, and added new directories to it?

I’d disable that wireless adapter entirely unless you’re on a laptop and need the wireless connection. Both interfaces won’t be used to trunk traffic together without some advanced networking setup.

Where do i put /etc/fstab? What file do i put it into?

@johnmarshall802

The file “fstab” is located in the “/etc” directory.

you getting tired? (it’s late for me)

from your command line terminal.

man fstab

it’ll show you what you need

In my How-To

I show you step by step.

Walk through my example, substituting your local devices / directories.
The process is the same.

I built a library in a few clicks. Then i clicked on save and “the library can’t be saved.” Should i be able to save it? How do i rectify this?
Thank you in advanced. I directed the media on a directory on a removable hard drive. Media/action named it action.

How are your USB drives mounted? And with what permissions?
Does user “plex” have read/write permission in that location?

Oh, and scrolling through this thread, I see you plan on screwing with /etc/fstab.
Be sure you have a backup of the file on media you can emergency boot with; mess that file up and the machine won’t boot right. Might get single-user mode if that.

Stop plex

In terminal command line window, type: (You may copy & paste this line into the window.

sudo tar cf  ~/PlexLogs.tar.gz  "/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Logs"

When it completes, you will find “PlexLogs.tar.gz” in your home folder.

Please upload it here.

PlexLogs.tar.gz (255.9 KB)
Here is PlexLogs.tar.z
Is there a way to get this done without messing with fstab?

First order of business — Get the DNS working.

Set the network configuration to point to the IP address of the modem/router
– DNS
– Gateway

Mar 31, 2023 19:12:15.757 [0x7f80dbceab38] WARN - [HttpClient/HCl#4] HTTP error requesting GET https://plex.tv/api/v2/server/users?auth_token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (6, Couldn’t resolve host name) (Could not resolve host: plex.tv)

After that’s set, restart plex.

Once we figure out what’s happening, we’ll address what needs or doesn’t need to go where.

The Kubernetes is bothering me.

ChuckPA, I don’t know if this is relevant, but maybe his router or whatever he’s using for DNS is choking on the errors due to the plex domains not being registered properly?

In order to avoid DNS-based advertising, I’ve run my own DNS server (not a forwarder, full server) for about 10 years now, so I have access to the server’s logs. There is some sort of issue with the plex domains.
I’ve mentioned this before on these boards, and supposedly it’s a known issue.
It’s not a problem for me, aside from cluttering up the logs, but maybe it’s preventing lookups on some router software?

Think you need to reconsider:

What is this?

@johnmarshall802

Annoyed thought it was a DNS issue.
I showed it’s not.

sorry to have gone off-topic. I’ll purge the posts if you request.

New question:
Im using filebot to rename file Im also using {~plex <<sy.bounds().joining(‘-’,‘[’)} . Now where do i put airdate in that line so it will read. Firefly/season: 1 [2002-2003]/(airdate)- firefly -s03e01-Serenity? John

I use FileBot as well.

I don’t use the {plex} preset

FireFly is THE most problematic series going.

AirDate and DVD order don’t match. The studios aired it out of order from how it was written, to boot.

If you want air-date episode sequencing then you’re best to do it manually.

I do all episodes order and manually.
– I have different ‘tv’ directories based on general category.
– I edit the FileBot format as needed (tv, tv2, tv3, tv4, etc)

/nas/media/tv4/{n}/Season {s.pad(2)}/{n} - {s00e00} - {t}

If you look here:

https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

You see where you’d have something of the form:

/nas/media/tv4/{n}/Season {s.pad(2)}/{n} - {airdate} - {t}

@ChuckPa :

I am trying to work on the “Flintstones” which are in that order. AirDate and DVD. Could this be done

{airdate} {series} - {s} {e} - Fred builds a house

Can I also Use {“Date Aired”} {Airdate} {“Season:”} {s} {“Episode:”} {e} {“episode title:”} {t}

Will it work in plex??BTW What does Season {s.pad(2)}

  1. You must always put the Series Name first.
{airdate} - {series}

is backwards

  1. You can’t actively mix airdate order and Season/Episode matching order.
    Pick one, Hide the other in [hidden here]

  2. You must always preserve the integrity of “SxxExx” if you want season & episode.
    Hand crafting it with words as you are here, won’t work

  3. {s.pad(2)} pads the Season number {s} with leading zeros if needed until it’s length 2.

I was wondering if I can do this :
series-s01e12-title duration.format (“HH:ss”) char(0) . ? or do I have to end the line with the title? and will plex work with this line? John

You missed this part of the naming -

  • Many of our naming instructions mention having Optional_Info at the end of the file name. As the label suggests, it’s optional, but many people like to use it for things such as an episode title. Such optional info is ignored by Plex when matching content with legacy agents, but it is used in the Plex TV Series agent to give a hint for matching. If you want info to be ignored put the optional info in brackets. e.g. /Band of Brothers (2001) - s01e01 - Currahee [1080p Bluray].mkv

from here:

https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

  1. If you want the date as well, hide it in the [ stuff here ] area
  2. Don’t mix Episode naming format with date format
  3. You need a space in the series - SxxExx part but —
    – Unsupported but often works: Series.SxxExx.[Stuff here].ext
    – Most series will match but you’ll find tough ones which don’t.

I always use the full proper standard because we’re using a naming tool to do the work.

{n} / Season {s} / {n} - {s00e00} - {t}

n = name
s = season
s00e00 = SxxExx numbering
t = title

If your renaming tool has other things, you can wrap that info,
One example would be to add resolution: {n} - {s00e00} - {t} [{resolution}].ext

Can I rename movies with filebot that flex can use? Can the filebot line be like ::
{y} {n}{resolution}{duration.format(“hh:mm:ss”}? John
