Server with external usb 6tb hard drives (3)

I have a upright computer with 3 upright 6tb usb hard drives hooked to it. A roku ultra box .
How do i get the plex app on roku to “see” the hard drives and use them?

Thank you,
John

I suppose you have installed the Plex Media Server package on your Linux server, finished the setup and added your libraries pointing to those 3 6TB hard drives?

If the PMS and your Roku Plex app are both signed into the same Plex account, the Roku should automatically see all your libraries.

Can I use Roku Player to play my videos on the Plex Server? How do I get Roku Player to see the Video files? Also how do I find my server’s ip address if plex setup says that 192.168.1.5 in Linux? John

These are USB external drives.
Are they accessible to the OS?
Can you access them while logged into the machine?
Ex: if one is mounted at /mnt/plex/media_1/ , can you change to that directory [ cd /mnt/plex/media_1/ ] and list the contents? The drive may not be mounted.
Can you see them with the web browser interface?
Have you added lines to /etc/fstab to mount them at boot time? Are they unmounting themselves if idle? USB can be quirky.
Regarding up address, what happens if you open http://192.168.1.5:32400 on another browser on that same network?

In case it’s needed -

Yes i can change to that directory on the media server machine.

Yes they are accessible but not playable , because they are in mkv format.

What about a workaround that can make plex player play these files?

@johnmarshall802

PMS plays MKV files just as readily as it plays MP4. Don’t think you have to change all MKV’s to MP4.

192.168.1.5:32400
“Refused to connect!”

if “refused to connect” – server isn’t running.

URL should be : http://192.168.1.5:32400/web if that’s the server machine on your LAN.

If it’s the machine you’re also typing here with: http://127.0.0.1:32400/web

Might be a good idea to make a tar.gz of `“/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs” directory and attach that tar.gz file here.

It worked when i got on a computer across the room. It only showed the desktop without the drive down the left side
Now how do i get it to show the drives!!?

Also how do l login into the plex app from my server? And show the drives down the left side on my roku box?

Not understanding here. Were you previously on a different network / remote to it?

From what you typed above, I think you’re using two different locations / networks.

LAN addresses from one won’t work on the other. The only way to get from one to the other is SSH-tunnel . If you’re remote that means you have to go 'out and around" via the publish IP address.

Here is the plex log(s). I forgot to do this , John

I see part of the problem.

You have two internet adapters on the same subnet.

That’s not going to work without help.

  1. stat -rn must show the 192.168.1.3 (or whichever it is) is the default adapter and pointing to the default gateway

  2. Two adapters on the same subnet requires advanced network setup which I don’t see here.

  3. You need to get the network to stop flopping

Lastly, Is your ISP AT&T ? (trying to figure out what I see)

1.3 is a wired net
1.5 is a wireless net
No it is a local isp.

I only have I on adapter.

I only get 1.5 and 1.3 because the wire that goes from router to computer has ip 192.168.1.3
The other is the wireless ip.

There is no switch and no subnet.

Now should ip be different from default gateway and the computer? How would i allocate a new ip address for the computer?

Just to be clear on terminology, you have to have a subnet definition, or you don’t have a network.

1.3 is a wired net
1.5 is a wireless net
No it is a local isp.

I only have I on adapter.

Are you saying that the machine the server is on only has one network adapter?

Are you trying to access it from the wrong side of a router?
Routers have two (or more) sides; the inside interface and the outside interface. The outside is possibly your uplink (modem/ONT or whatever) or other uplink to the Internet, and the internal interface is where you connect your "inside’ gadgets. These are almost always on different networks (or subnets, if you prefer) and very rarely are they able to pass traffic right thru without special configuration.

Perhaps a detailed description of your network would be helpful, even if it’s a plain old ASCII art picture so we can see what you’re doing.

Look again at the machine. If your machine is the same as everyone else with built-in Wifi then it has:

  1. Traditional physical ethernet adapter (RJ-45)
  2. One wireless adapter

Both of them exist (unless you’ve changed the netmask of 255.255.255.0) on the same subnet 192.168.1.x (given how the addresses are defined)

If you want both wired and wireless networks, a standard configuration would be something like this:

  1. Wired = 192.168.1.0 / 255.255.255.0
  2. Wireless = 192.168.2.0 / 255.255.255.0

Please don’t confused about wired vs wireless.

It’s perfectly valid to have both Wired and Wireless hosts on the same subnet. PMS will easily get confused.

You need to be careful where you bring them together (usually done at the modem/router and/or WiFI AP. The WiFi AP simply converts Wireless to wired . It doesn’t create a new network.

Right on - if they do not mount at boot you can see the files access the files but not play the files until you get them to mount at boot. (building a new machine last night and did that)
If you are not familiar with f-stab and are using Ubuntu there is a utility program called Disks that makes creating a mount point etc. much easier than having to learn F-stab…

Did you notice,

I previously linked the How-To, with step-by-step example of what to do?

This is exactly how mine is.

Wired= 192.168.1.3
255.255.255.0

Wireless= 192.168.1.5
255.255.255.0

Im using dhcp which isnt the best way to do this.
