Could it be possible to make Plex remember the subtitle set per show? So if I select Norwegian for S01E01, then it would autoset this for S01E02 as well? I’m a bit tired of losing the start of each episode because I always have to enter menu to set the subtitle. The reason for not setting this globally in Plex is that different shows have different subtitles for the same language. Sometimes the subtitles are called Norwegian, and sometimes it’s “Norsk” or similar. But the subtitles are mostly consistent within a show.
You can already set this per show and library.
IIRC this requires the current-generation Plex TV Series agent.
There’s an option at the show level in the advanced settings to set preferred audio and subtitles. I use this on my dual-audio anime to set jpn\eng subs or eng\eng forced subs. It seems to work pretty well. It might be what you’re looking for here.
It’s a per user setting so if you set it for yourself I don’t think it impacts other users but I’m not 100% sure about that…
thanks. I see the language setting for subtitles is set, but unfortunately there are many ways of spelling my language so it should be more than one setting there, or it should be some kind of regex or similar.
Should still be referring to the same language?
What language are you having trouble with?
Norwegian.
It can be “Norsk”, “Norwegian”, “Norsk bokmål”,
Could use PastaTool to sort of handle this? At least it should help you set all episodes at once, and supports doing whole seasons or entire shows at once.
That would be just a label. Labels are good for reading by humans.
However, a properly tagged file uses internationally normed language codes within a specific meta tag which only exists for the purpose of signifying the language of a track. And there are no spelling differences with these.
As far as Plex is concerned, it will only use the language meta tags for automatically selecting tracks, not the labels.
The same applies for external subtitles, btw. If they have a proper language code in their file name, Plex will always recognize the same language.

ok. I guess the tag is then “no”. I mostly use Plex app on Chromecast if that’s relevant.
That shouldn’t really matter as language selection is applied by the server based on your account language preferences (or a library/show based override of a specific user).
Plex will pickup subtitles in all those Norwegian flavors in line with the official language codes. Here’s an example with 2 and 3-letter codes according to ISO 639:
Original Files
Found by Plex after refreshing the episode metadata
Plex will subsequently also list the additionally found languages in the subtitle preference for the show. In the example below you can see that Plex is listing…
- the languages from my account preferences (here:
English) - the library language (here:
German) - additionally found languages of subtitles in that show (here:
Norwegian Bokmål,Norwegian NynorskandNorwegian) - the list of languages considered “standard” by Plex
