Hello, i’m trying a first-time setup w/ Window machine and a Synology 1815+.
I have the PMS installed and running according to the Synology Package Center (DSM 5.1).
Whenever I run web.tv or the Plex Media Player, (after logging in) it says “…looking for servers…” forever.
When I try to connect to http://ip.address.of.syno:32400/web in a browser, i get NOTHING. It times out. No ‘setup wizard’, just a blank ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT
PMS version: 1.5.5.3634-995f1dead
This is where i am stuck. Any help greatly appreciated.
I should also add, the server doesn’t show up in Devices.
Not using any VPN or proxies on computer or router.
SSL not ‘required’ to access the Syn, my normal way of logging in is just http:
Under ‘settings’ in PMP, there is no ‘Server’ menu selection.
I read something about “Make sure both the Server and app are on the same subnet of the network”, but not sure how to do that. PC is 192.168.$.$ and Syn is :http://192.168.1.86:5000/ . Syn IP seems pretty ‘static’ hasn’t changed in year+
Ok, progress. I can now access the ‘Server Setup’ page (ie. my ip:32400/web ), ( i had not created a special “open” rule for the Firewall, only deleted all my old rules. Once i had new open rule i got to Server Setup).
but now, it says “unclaimed server” etc…and wants me to log in. (even though I am already logged in). Ok, but when i try that, I get:
note: it seems to ALSO want an upgrade, which is odd because i just downloaded again today…i’m assuming the issues are un-related (esp. since its recmmending the same number build ‘1.5.5.3634’ I’m running 1.5.5.3634-995f1dead
You will see those forward migrations during the first run of the database. This is entirely normal.
As for the ‘signing in’ problem… let’s go grab the log files manually and see what it’s complaining at. 99.999% of the time it’s networking
a. Open the Plex share
b. Drill down until you see the Logs directory
c. Right click on Logs and select Compress to Logs.zip.
d. Attach that ZIP file with your next post.
you can do it there, specifying 8.8.8.8 as the secondary or you can set Google’s DNS and the primary and avoid the DNS extra hops (I personally find it more reliable and quicker to go direct than through the ISP).
Also, your screen capture shows the next thing I was going to mention.
Turn off IPv6. It’s not needed, will confuse a lot of things (especially the Synology) and PMS can’t get any metadata from it anyway . V6 is LAN-only at this point in it’s lifespan. There’s no support for it on the internet backbone.
If you edit the adapter itself, you can also do this.. Here’s mine as easiest way to describe. My modem goes to 8.8.8.8 so is 1 hop DNS.
so, when you say “secondary DNS” i’m not sure what you mean. Under the General tab, there is an “Alternative DNS Server” field…but in your screenshot you blue-highlight the ‘DNS Server’ field under Network Interface. Which one do i set to 8.8.8.8 ?
Also, i dont know how to use your preferred method “set Google’s DNS and the primary and avoid the DNS extra hops”.
DHCP Server is totally disabled, is that correct?
Under IpV6, i set to OFF.
Still cannot log in, same problems as before. (i turned off PMS, made changes, hit save, then run again)
Secondary = Alternate . sorry, two terms for the same thing just as Primary = First.
from your network config as you have it there, you can make that DNS 8.8.8.8 (it reaches to google directly)
It’s best to keep “General” and “eth0” in perfect sync with each other.
While in there, make sure you don’t have a MTU set. If you do, make it 1500. Do not use Jumbo Packets. They will screw it all up unless everything is perfect.
After you do this, Restart DSM. We’ve slapped around the networking quite a bit.
WHen it comes back up, we’re going to grab your Logs again.
If you want to look at them yourself. Plex Media Server.log should have NO curl errors. Curl Errror 6 is the DNS lookup. Curl Error 28 is communications timeout.
