Shield Plex Player seems to be stuck in some sort of “read-only” mode

Sorry meant to get back to you, there has been a regression with logged out user accounts in some backend changes we have made. The team is aware of the issue but unsure when they will be able to fix it at the moment.

Hello. Thanks so much for getting back to me. I am glad that the team has figured out what is causing the issue. Is there a way to check back for an update later? Would you foresee this fix making it into the next Android release, whenever that is? Thank you!

You can subscribe to the android tv thread, where new updates with notes are posted.

Thanks. I will make sure to check it.

I am assuming that it will be a long time, if ever, before this is fixed in an actual release, lol. I am sure that I am in the minority since I do not log in with an account (I only use locally). This bug is extremely freaking annoying though.

Sorry if this is a really dumb question, but how do I get the Beta Plex Player on my Shield? Do I need to sideload the APK?

here you go…

Thank you! Do you happen to know if the issue has been fixed or is close to being fixed? I’ve been searching the beta notes and unless I missed it, I don’t think I saw anything about it being fixed.

I hope you had a nice holiday. I was just hoping to follow up to see when this is planned to be fixed? I’ve been following the beta versions but I have not yet seen it mentioned as an included fix.

Hello. Can you please provide a status update on this? Using Plex without an account is almost completely broken at this point. Please help!!

Hello, I continue to follow up on this. It would be nice if you could just confirm the status of this? I brought this issue up months ago and I have yet to get a single response. Can you PLEASE just respond with a status update? Even if the team hasn’t gotten to fixing this issue yet, it would still be nice to at least receive a response so I know.

Please Plex Devs can we get an update on this? Just a response that you’re still looking into it would be nice. Please Devs?

Following up again…come on Plex team. Please give an update?

I will follow up on this every single day until it is answered…

Following up.

I’ve raised this with the team responsible.

Dude thank you! I miss having full functionality in Plex :-(. Also, do you know what caused the AAC 5.1 → OPUS transcoding regression? Happens with both HDMI and optical. The latest beta fixes the issue…but like…what happened? lol

There is a long thread on that. 5.1->OPUS have a search and read.

Yes, I read every single thread I could find. All I can find is that OPUS is supposed to be used as a more friendly solution for when you need to transcode. I saw that they originally thought to use OPUS for optical. My issue however, is that it seemed to be forcing OPUS for AAC 5.1, and it happened both on Optical AND using straight HDMI to the receiver/TV. So clearly something happened where ALL AAC 5.1 was being transcoded to OPUS instead of AC3, and THAT is what I cannot find information about. That seems like a straight mistake. There is no logic in it. This was also already fixed in the beta, so clearly it was an error.

Sometimes changes are made with the right intentions, but undersitate how much that feature is used or might affect users. so suspect something like that.

I recently moved away from Kodi (no reason other than, I needed to upgrade my hardware for 4K and shield was good option, but found NFS sharing painful to setup without full OS access (non rooted sheid). With all the issues w/ plex consider spending time to setup NFS so can move away from plex back to Kodi where I can control everything

I see that in the release history thread, you can still download older versions of the Android APK. I am just going to start keeping backups of releases so that I can roll back if needed. I’ve never side-loaded anything on the Shield. Do you use x-plore for that?
