Shield: Transcoding crashes with hardware acceleration enabled

Thanks

I have replicated the shield crash using your 2nd test clip. It happened towards the end of playback

I have referred this to the development teams

Does this issue only affect the Shield as I might just ditch using the Shield and return to Windows and add a GPU for HW transcoding. PMS on Shield is very broken for Sync/optimisation. I can confirm I get exactly the same issues no matter what I try to sync/optimise. Amazed that it hasn’t been addressed yet.

There is an issue with optimize and sync that fixes are being worked on. At the moment if hardware transcoding fails for sync and optimize, the automatic switch to software transcoding does not work. This is an issue affecting all platforms and is not just the Shield. Fixes are being produced.

Ah so I think I’m experiencing this. I see in the logs a switch from HW to SW transcoding and it seems to be happening while I’m using another application (Netflix/Amazon) to stream on the Shield and then a remote users starts watching something from my library. The switch to SW then freezes the Shield (no surprise there). Good luck to you and the team with this issue!

Long time Plex user here, and mainly a reader on the forums.

I just tried with the latest Shield Experience 7.2.3, but the problem persists.

This issue has made me upset with the lack of progress in the past 8 months, and the fact that Plex and Nvidia continue to market the Shield as a great Plex server.

The Shield has been a significantly worse server than my 8-year old Mac Mini it replaced.

I would like to thank this group for being so patient and cooperative, by providing repeated logs and samples. But I think it’s time that the group publicized the problem by taking the discussion to social media, in the hopes of drawing more attention and a solution to the issue.

Here’s a link to the latest Plex newsletter and Nvidia blog post as reference:

My word! I couldn’t say it better!

I bought the Shield ONLY for transcoding, now I’m just dealing around with problems!
My 8 years old NAS worked more reliable as a Plex server then the Shield. And the worst thing is: there is no way to backup and switch back to my NAS.

It’s a shame Nvidia and Plex still sell the Shield TV as a great Plex Server for transcoding. Because in the actual state of the software it’s a completely useless piece of sh*t.

Trying out Emby for now. Hope Plex and Nvidia will show some efforts and invest resources to fix the problems on their commercial marketed product!

Don’t understand me wrong! I’m a long time Plex user and always patient if they need to fix some bugs, since Plex is a small team and they offer basic functionality for free. But Plex Server on Shield TV is a commercial product, thousands of people buy this product because of their advertisement! This needs to maintained more than any other Plex software!!

Same issue here. I’m glad I checked the forum before trying a factory reset. 2015 Shield w/ SSD to store Plex data and a nas storing the media.

I am having the same issue. This is from a shield purchased March of this year. Get a few skips a few min in, then skips get worse, then system becomes sluggish and unresponsive. Finally stream is terminated and plex resets!

Thanks for confirming that the current release of the Plex for Android App for the SHIELD no longer fails when attempting to Direct Play

The large font attachment was causing Direct Play to fail and to switch to transcoding.

Release Note for 7.13.0

  • Playback: failure to direct play videos that contain large embedded attachments (e.g. fonts).

For the users that have this problem does it crash with every video that needs to be transcoded - or is it with only with certain ones? For me it is with every file that needs transcoding. While monitoring the transcoding in Tautulli it drops the transcoding speed to 0 after a few minutes then crashes.

Also - has anyone tried on a separate shield? I’m beginning to wonder if our hardware is bad and if the issue would be present on a separate shield on the same network in the same conditions.

Update May 13, 2019
Since upgrading to Version 1.14.1.5490 (From Feb 2019 release), my Nvidia shield is having no issues transcoding HEVC and H264 (seeing it go to 5x when transcoding!). I haven’t tried any other formats. That solves my issues as I don’t care about other formats.

Previous post
Joining the group of disappointed users. I struggled for the last few weeks trying to get optimised files for mobile devices. Finally I came across this forum and disabled hardware encoding. Now the trans-coding completes with no issues. It’s a shame I don’t get to take advantage of all that hardware grunt!

Can we please get a status on this next release for the shield that is suppose to fix hardware encoding?

Just like to chime in and say that I’m having the same issues. I’ll be watching something and all of a sudden my stream will start to skip as if it can’t keep up with the bitrate and I am unable to back out or anything because it’s basically crashed the shield. When this occurs, I login to the web UI and can see that another user is transcoding (hw)

I don’t have any logs or anything to hand right now but will post at a later date.

Are there any updates on this? It’s been a while since the last release and this problem has been ongoing for months…

I replicated the issue by playing a file at original quality on the SHIELD’s plex client and used my laptop to initiate a transcode from 1080p H264 to 720p High preset. Almost immediately the playback on my shield was stuttery and kept freezing until shortly after when I get the PLEX logo and everything crashes. Curiously the transcoded stream keeps playing so maybe it’s the SHIELD PLEX player crashing I have no idea…

From logs when crash occurs:

Apr 23, 2019 15:08:04.506 [11611] ERROR - [PlexRelay] kex protocol error: type 7 seq 11
Apr 23, 2019 15:08:04.573 [11672] ERROR - [PlexRelay] kex protocol error: type 7 seq 11

I am using the Nvidia SHIELD as PLEX server connected to a NAS for shares.

Server version 1.14.1.5490 and Player version 7.14.1.9954

I have this issue as well. When I make a DVR OTA recording and ā€œoptimizeā€ with HW acell enabled, the transcode fails almost every time. With HW acell turned off, works every time. Side note: I’ve had tons of stability issues with the Plex server on the Shield when HW acell enabled, never have had an issue (other than lots of things are unusable because it’s so slow) with HW acell off.

I have been having this issue, but it’s been hard to narrow down, as I only use my shield for streaming remotely.

In this instance, streaming remotely, transcoding from 1080p to 720p, with hardware, and subtitles, and it is being streamed to the Plex client for PS3.

1.15.6.1079 is now out for the shield so you should try transcoding again

I’m running one for the last 10m and keeps on going but the speed is low 1x or around and seems to me as if hardware transcoding is not used

Started the transcoding for my sample movie (i provided a snippet to the team). Seems they really just disabled hardware transcoding. Embarrassing!

At least the transcoder now knows at which media it will fail and uses the software transcoder right at the start, but after all these months, i expected a real fix, not a workaround…

I am happy to report that this new version fixes the crashes for me, finally normal HW encoding again, after all those months!! Thanks guys! (I bought a lifetime pass now, you’re wecome)
