Shield: Transcoding crashes with hardware acceleration enabled

Since testing the Plex server on my Shield, I’ve now discovered this thread as I am seeing similar issues with hardware transcoding - both during streaming and optimizing.

Hope the Plex team can address this soon as it is literally a show-stopper for using Plex Server on Shield.

Light at the end of the tunnel:

Glad to see this thekiefs. I was hoping Sheild/Plex could avoid a one year anniversary of this topic, which would be August.

So it was Plex leaking memory all along? How can the Plex dev team not reproduce/fix this quicker?

Having tested a bit the beta version with this fix - sorry I can’t share, don’t have such permissions - I can say that for sure there is no crash and fallback to software decoder.

At least on the videos I used the conversation rate was on average at x6

@ge_bil does this fix “live” transcoding as well? i.e. watching a stream that is being HW transcoded? I’m more interested in that than “background” transcoding. Thanks. Really glad if this is fixed.

I can confirm the same. I have a beta build and h/w transcoding is fixed.

Seems so, tested with a few 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) and they are HW transcoded just fine when I play them on my mobile to H264 without any crashes or so

Great to hear!

So where are we at with this… I had the beta build for the Nvidia shield and now that 8.0 is out, that fix is out the the public. I am running 1.16.3.1402 and I assume this is not the Beta build you guys are talking about (or is it). I heard rumor that a beta build was to be released on the 26th and something to the public on the 6th. I am in the beta program but I think there is even another beta program which you guys are talking about.

As far as I know, I am still waiting on the next build to be released for this memory issue to be fixed and I can then enable Hardware Transcoding.

Correct?

The beta with the fix I have is 1.16.4 so I assume it is not out yet in public beta

Thanks for letting me know.

This wait is killing me!

Seriously though, can anyone shed some light on this early-beta/alpha version? It seems several people have it, so I’m guessing it’s not a raw dev build. How would one hypothetically qualify for joining this “beta before the beta” group??

As far as i know, Nvidia fixed the issue, not the plex team… they didn’t manage to fix it since a year.

Wow! Plex is back!
After almost one year of waiting i can finally start using my SHIELD TV as a Plex Server.
My girlfriend with awful internet connection will be happy

So… I’m going to ask a silly question… but my plex on my ShieldTV still says 1.14.1.5488.

How do I go about getting it updated…?
