Shield tv don't hw transcode

same problem for me

Let’s hope they fix this by accident when they fix the issue with the Shield 9.0 Update.

Here’s the proof again, server on the shield and simultaneous playback on the shield. HW trancoding works with old version 1.24.5.5173. But with new version it tries HW then aborts and then transcodes with SW. The result is buffering in playback.

Yup I had complaints from friends using my server before that suddenly it just wasn’t working with stuff that they had started watching fine before even before the whole shield experience update fiasco due to them breaking the transcoding. I was hoping the update was going to accidentally fix that problem, I certainly wasn’t counting on it killing the server definitively.

I’ve been able to reproduce, HW transcoding on same device with 1.24, fallback to software on 1.25. We are looking into this.

I am facing the same problem with no hw transcde but have a different error mesage in plex media server:
Jan 15, 2022 19:26:54.347 [8861] Error — [Transcoder] MediaCodecNDK binder library (libndkbinderutil.so) not loaded
Jan 15, 2022 19:26:54.347 [8853] Error — [Transcoder] Error while opening decoder for input stream #0:0 : Encoder not found
Also on Nvidia Shield TV Pro with the latest 9.0 Update and Hotfix installed

I am also getting a lot of buffering on my NSTV 2015 running the latest 9.0 update with ALL HEVC files that used to transcode to H264 and play normally before for all these years.

I look up the logs and I have no message saying that hardware transcode is disabled. At least I couldn’t find it.

But the performance is definitely subpar. I can only assume hardware transcoding is disabled.

You can find out if HW transcoding is disabled by looking at the plex dash app as jj1973 did. If you have the HW symbol then you are ok.

Any timeline for a fix here? This severely limits the use of the Shield as a Plex Media Server, as it can’t support more than a single stream at a time without periods of buffering.

Same problem, the PMS set up on my Nvidia shield tv (2017) does not use (hw) when transcoding to any of my clients.

Did before, not anymore.

Server is not usable until this is fixed.

Not yet. We are still investigating. I can reproduce the issue, but haven’t identified the cause.

Please note that this issue existed before the Shield Experience 9 Update and it was not the cause. That might be an important bit of information to consider which would help narrow down the cause of the error.
The issue existed in PMS v1.25.3.5385 (and according to others v1.25.5319) which were both released prior to the Shield Experience 9 update.

I uninstalled PMS updates, then sideloaded the latest v1.24x version from here, and now transcoding is working again.

Correct. With Experience 9 (Android 11) HW transcoding is totally broken, not just in the scenario of playing back on the same device.

No, they are saying HW transcoding is broken because of PMS v1.25.x, not because of Shield 9 update.

I never had Shield 9 update but HW transcoding didn’t work with v1.25.x It wasn’t the issue you keep mentioning about not being able to HW transcode while playing on the same device.

We’re saying PMS v1.25.x totally FUBARed HW transcoding for all scenarios, regardless of Shield version.

Yes. I can vouch for this as well

HW decoding was already problematic way before Shield 9 came around.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. Let me clarify.

Shield Experience 8 (Android 9) - HW transcoding is broken with PMS 1.25.x but only when playing on the Shield itself. There should not be HW transcoding issues playing from other clients. If you have this, please provide logs so I can investigate. I have not been able to reproduce any other issues myself. I can confirm this issue on the Shield itself. There is some issue with ndkdecoder being used by both PMS and the client app at the same time.

Shield Experience 9 (Android 11) - HW transcoding broken for all transcodes regardless of what version of PMS you are using. This is an issue with Android 11 we are investigating. Once we resolve the Android 11 issue, we still need to address the 1.25.x PMS issue. Although it’s possible fixing Android 11 will also fix this issue. We still need to fix it for Android 9.

I still disagree with your assessment, because as you keep saying, the HW transcode issue only occurred when using the Shield for playback locally on Shield Experience 8.

I’m saying I was on Shield Experience 8, v1.25.x PMS, and HW transcoding didn’t work on any player. I tested with an iOS phone using cellular data (so it would transcode a much lower quality and test external playing).

I posted that issue and the logs in the other HW transcoding thread here;

I’ll no longer be able to reproduce issues as I’ve downgraded to v1.24 where everything is working fantastic.

I mentioned a possible issue in that thread but you never followed-up. To be clear, hw transcoder was being used. For your case I think it was a player issue.
