Should I "upgrade" my libraries?

Thanks. This still doesn’t feel like a leap forward, and nagging me to convert my existing, carefully built TV database isn’t a tempting offer right now.

Preface this with saying I have a lifetime Plex Pass (after paying yearly for 3 or 4 years before that), so I have put my money where my mouth is.

I’ve updated all but one of my TV libraries, and I’ve upgraded my two movie libraries (regular and documentaries). So far it seems like they’ve survived mostly fine, though I didn’t have a huge amount of manual metadata editing in those libraries, mostly just custom posters, which by and large did make it through OK.

What I don’t love is the direction this is trending where the writing is on the wall (and has been for a while) that Plex is turning into a completely proprietary closed-off system. Starting your own database is great, as long as it’s not the only option. I have written a bunch of my own agents for things that will never be in your database, and I don’t want or need them to be.

It’s really sad, and the fact that the attitude in this thread from Plex employees has basically been “suck it up, this is what we’re doing, tough crap” and in one case trying to tell someone that what they are doing isn’t supported, despite their being a support page that literally in no uncertain terms says to do exactly what they’re doing (and then the employee tries to argue that’s not what the page means) is absolute ABSURDITY.

I have defended Plex in the past with its various missteps, between the cliff you went flying over with telemetry and random other mistakes you’ve made and problems you’ve caused (syncing being broken for literally years; arcade that literally nobody asked for, was mostly broken on arrival, somehow cost extra money, and I’d be shocked if anybody actually uses; webhooks which notify of items added but seem to fire at random times and don’t bother detailing when multiple episodes of a show are added at once, making it mostly useless), but at this point I can’t in good conscience recommend this software anymore for anyone who has any inkling they might want to do something that is not precisely prescribed by Plex, whatever that happens to be tomorrow, or next week, or next year.

I’m here for now but if you go through with your plan to eliminate all ability for third-party agents to function, I will be gone because I have no choice.

That hasn’t changed significantly. The legacy agents also send library scan & match & metadata requests to Plex servers.

It sounded like it just dumps it completely on their servers not just by unmatched requests.

“Nonsense” the fact the new meta scanner does it, or that I made the statement?
You may want to read the dev board about that. The new meta scanner uses internal DB’s on initial scan. Turn on your wireshark and try it!

Same problem for me too

Knock on wood, upgrading the libraries didn’t cause any major damage for me, and now that I have matched a few shows, they are updating fine.

I use ChannelsDVR, so the shows come and go on a daily basis. I was worried at first when a few shows didn’t match, when they were before the “upgrade” using TVDB. I simply re-matched with the non-default, TVDB option, and it matched. After deleting the episode, when the show was recorded the next day, it matched! Movie matching wasn’t a problem and seem to be a true upgrade. Concert matching is better too so far.

Spoke too soon. I do have some problems that need sorting…

Stupid that it “upgrades” every library when only one has changed and the others have gone through the “upgrade” and not changed anything. What a waste of time! There should be a way to lock it when no changes have been made. An “ignore” unpinned libraries from being upgraded would be helpful.

True, there seems to be no way to troubleshoot the matching, and as far as I can tell, there’s no way to manually “Fix match” like previously either.

I switched back to the legacy ones for now, but hoping this experience improves.

Yes, you are correct about that, sorry. The experience I had that I was misremembering was that I couldn’t match a show correctly, and wasn’t sure how to fix it like I would with TVDB previously.

I recommend to not use the automatic upgrade which is prompted by this popup.
Instead, use these articles as reference to do the migration manually.

Yes. Check every Agent setting before you start the “upgrade”! They are a bit counterintuitive in the overall settings. The advance settings for the individual libraries are less complicated. I use local assets for music but not for video. I changed that and all my album covers began to show up.

I just want my movie posters back! My library looks hideous now. :sleepy:

I didn’t lose any movie posters. Are yours named correctly with the year?

Oh you didn’t? Great for you. Mine all changed with the update. I have them all located in /movie_title/poster.jpg per Plex’s naming conventions. I’ve been using Plex since the beginning. Not a newbie here.

I don’t have any poster.jpg files so I have “The Movie Database” checked and on top in settings/agents under movies. Do you have “Local Media Assets (Movies)” checked and on top considering you use your own posters?
