I tried the ‘Plex Series’ for a few months. I hate it. The order of episodes is just random, and doesn’t match anything I can find. Lots of them are just wrong, as if there is a randomization routine to create episodes.
It’s slow to update, and slower to get corrected.
I went back to TheTVDB.com and MovieDB.com for my media scanners.
However, I always get the reminder to ‘upgrade my libraries’. It’s really annoying.
If I wanted to use the less accurate media scanner I would. Just disable the reminder, I don’t want to use the Plex Series scanner.
Sorry, but no such option
The default show order is for the TMDB when you upgrade. It’s not random but if all your media was named and organized by TVDB you’re going to see conflicts
You can change that to TVDB for the whole library or by individual show if you’re having a problem with things not matching
Library –> manage library –> edit –> advanced
You can do the same per show by clicking the pencil in the individual show poster
Can it be added?
It’s just like Windows, constantly reminding me to upgrade to ‘Edge’.
The Plex Series Scanner is not very good. You shouldn’t constantly remind people to use it.
It’s not only the future, but also a lot faster, adds more internal info about medias, that are used for other functions. But yes, does req. you to select defaults, like @JaysPlex mentions, as well as do req. you to follow the naming std.
Well, since old legacy agents no longer is been developed, we want people to use the new one, as well as the old ones are based on Python, which we slowly are phasing out, we remind people for a reason
So short answer is: No, it can not be added
The Plex Series is totally random.
I have shows, where TVDB matches IMDB and matches the Producers website.
Yet, Plex Series has something totally different.
Can you get the new Plex Scanner the option to go to a more reliable source? Like IMDB or TVDB?
Or give us the option to update the data for Plex Series to correct it?
The new agents use watch.plex.tv as the source.
That again, is made out of combining different sources.

Above can not be changed, sorry
Update the info on tmdb, imdb or tvdb, depending on who got it wrong, or edit your metadata, and then lock it
That’s not true.
TVDB is correct, and has been correct.
I have dozens of shows that match TVDB 100%, but plex gives them different episode names.
Shows that have been ‘off air’ for years.
Here’s a different example. ‘Outrageous Acts of Science’. Plex Scanner gives nearly all episodes, names like ‘Episode 1’. ‘Episode 2’.
But as you might suspect, the episodes actually have names. IMDB and TVDB both have names for the episodes.
There are a few shows like this.
But the bigger problem really, is that Plex Series has a source, other than IMDB or TVDB, so I don’t know how to line up my episodes to match what Plex Series has.
So I have an episode, that is a specific name, which matches TVDB and IMDB. But I don’t know where to put it in my library, because of Plex’s random episode names that don’t match up.
If I could at least see the ‘official list’ for Plex Series, then I could try to put episodes in the same order.
Plex TV series agent and scanner
Named according to the TVDB with TVDB episode order selected for the library
There is no tv episode order for IMDB. IMDB is only for movies
What source the metadata comes from has no impact on the show order. The show order will go with whatever source you pick. (TMDB OR TVDB) In the library settings I showed you
When someone says “the metadata comes from several different sources ” that also means things like show posters, show descriptions, and actor photos
The official list is the TVDB or TMDB.
As well as watch.plex.tv

Edit the show library, and make sure that it’s not set to use embedded metadata
Edit the show itself, or set the defaults at the library level
If your media is named as per the episode orders on tmdb or tvdb then the new agent/scanner will work and find the episodes correctly.
However, the upgrade to the new modern agent/scanner is a one way move. You cannot switch back as it can cause the library itself to break functionality. So if you’ve attempted to change the agent/scanner after upgrade then this may have happened …
Is your screen shot as it sits currently using the TVDB as the agent, or the way it was when you tried to switch over to Plex TV series?
I was in another thread the other day with 2 people having that same issue using the TVDB as their agent, with the shows not displaying titles. It only showed “Episode 1” like yours is
I’m wondering if they tried to switch back and forth between agents too. I’ll have to ask
The solution for one of them was to put the same shows in a newly created test library and that fixed it. Everything displayed correctly using the show titles properly again
You could give that a try.
Can you see that type of corruption in the logs @dokuro?
So my guess for this show is that because the metadata is fairly sparse on tmdb → Outrageous Acts of Science: Season 2 (2013) — The Movie Database (TMDB) plex and they are using tmdb episodes ordering. External ids on tmdb to tvdb also don’t exist. See the link above matches what plex is seeing based on the screenshot.
The fix is easy enough, add the metadata to tmdb and help out the community I should have some free later today so will add this. Once added it’ll then take 48-72 for it to replicate its way from tmdb into the back-end plex metadata cache servers. Switching to tvdb ordering should also work.
and another reason to why i dont “upgrade” the server/webagent. BS like this.
Wrong. IMDB is for everything related to movies, tv-shows etc.
is it easily accessible for “automations” probably not as easy as the two other
if you have ublock you could ass this:
Yourlocalip/webclientip##.oerz6r2a.oerz6r1y.oerz6r1v.oerz6r1d.oerz6r2y.jplqsr0.oerz6ra.oerz6ry._1g1ljm11 (ex:192.168.09)
it will only “hide” the Upgrade button/icon but better than noting and no accidental click
Yes, I realize IMDB lists TV shows and their order
What I’m saying is, there is no choice inside any Plex agents that allow you to pick IMDB’s TV show order to use
If you have a TV show you have named according to IMDB and it differs from TVDB and TMDB, you are SOL.
You can not add an IMDB show id like {imdb-49844} to your tv shows like you can using {tvdb-49844}
IMDB matches within Plex are only for movies
As far as Brians issue goes
Using the Plex TV scanner and agent To match Outrageous Acts of Science season 2
TMDB selected as the show order = what Brian is getting without the episode names
TVDB selected as the show order = All the show names populate correctly
For a single show like the one dokuro’s going to fix, yes that’s a problem
But if he is having a problem with dozens of shows he’s either still using the TMDB show order or something is broken
and that is a Plex weakness.
