should users keep being prompted to plex.tv/link ?

why does the process continually request linking via https://plex.tv/link ??

Initially I was remote accessing my Plex server using a smart TV, my login details, and each time the smartTV app was launched it would prompt a 4 digit code to be entered via: https://plex.tv/link Hardly real world problems, but an inconvenience all the same.

Once entered it seems to last approx 24hours before I hear from the user again.

So I got a Plex pass, setup my server as HOME and FRIENDS and configured the smartTV to use its OWN Plex account details, with a permitted share to my server.

But it still prompts prompts that 4 digit code to be entered, which I now add to the associated account (and not my own)
…one good thing I suppose.

Should it do this?
Why does it do this?

I had assumed that if you have an account, and you have linked your device once, that it wouldn’t happen again unless something significant changes to that config

TIA

The Smart TV should store the Plex token, so the login lasts longer

Which type of Smart TV is it?

Sometimes the way how the Plex app is closed does matter.
On some platforms, there is a ‘graceful’ and a ‘brutal’ way to do it:

On Samsung Smarthub TVs for instance, you must use the Exit button within the Plex app.
If you just use the Smarthub button on the remote, the Plex app will get terminated forcefully, before it can store its settings to non-volatile memory. This would then lead to the behaviour you’re describing.

ahhhh interesting. So it SHOULD remember the choice.

I think you are spot on with the graceful Vs brutal,
as we tried a different logout technique and I dont think I’ve heard again from the user. Its an LG

but I’m concerned that another FRIEND, will have the same experience with their Apple TV access… and neither of these users are super technically, so I just add the link to speed the process up.

I was expecting them to goto their chosen app and watch movies that are on my NAS

Once the link between device and plex account is made and stored, this is how it works.

ah ok. So in the smart TV case either we are doing something wrong or its just rubbish…

and in an AppleTV case it should stay linked once entered the first time.

What causes that link to change, an IP number change?

yes and yes

What causes that link to change, an IP number change?

Not an IP change, but several other things:

  • User can opt to ‘sign out’ from the plex.tv account within the app. Maybe he does this out of habit (because on websites this is really good practice)?
  • the Plex account owner changes his password and also clicks the checkbox ‘Sign Out all connected devices’
  • the Plex app is removed from the device (all its preferences go then, too)
  • a device defect, preventing storing app settings
  • a reset of the whole device to ‘factory settings’

[edit] or maybe is the TV disconnected from power after use? Some devices have a stupid design which makes them forget all preferences when power is cut.

ok great! you’ve given me a better understanding of the remote devices.

Did think it daft that it asks EVERYTIME you fire up the remote connection.

thank-you

On my Apple TV it asks once a month or so.
