Should we not see "HW" on both sides of the transcode now with 1.17.0.1709?

Server Version#: 1.17.0.1709

I’m only seeing “HW” on the encoding side but expect to see it on both after updating. I haven’t checked what “watch nvidia-smi” shows but I thought this wouldn’t be necessary.

I have seen the “HW” now on both sides… BUT
I’ve also seen it do the following using the same movie.

play the movie it may transcode using the GPU then it may not. doesn’t seem to be a logical reason as to when it will or not and yes sometimes it splits HW transcodeing.

hardware transcoding stops during optimize, no error just sits there. the system gets all it’s resources back like its finished. transcoder.exe just sits there. can kill it from PMS or the system no difference.

Yes the movie does play by Plex clients and they see no difference.
I tried the optimize just to see what it would do. It did work after a few tries (CPU only)
I ended it there since I didn’t need to spend more time playing around.

Are you using Tautulli to check status? If so, check the status on PlexWeb. I found a problem last night with Tautulli not always showing HW status correctly when using Nvidia (but it was on Windows for me and I don’t have an easy way to check on Linux).

Most of my videos are working correctly with HW to HW, but I have some videos that are failing to hw decode, so it does SW to HW.

If you have specific examples, you should shutdown/restart plex, playback and reproduce the video that fails to HW decode, then download logs and post them here or a dedicated thread with ALL your detailed info on your server/client (specific plex versions, what cpu/gpu/ram/etc).

Dev may also want a sample of the file which fails to hw decode.

it seems in my situation, most of the ones failing to decode seem to be older 720p x264 rips.

Cafe_diem - Yeah I usually use Tautilli. I’ll keep that in mind

TenkoJunky - Hmm ok. I’ll do that next time around. Some of my rips are fairly old but not 720p. All of the videos are x264 rips unless bluray to mkv
