Shuffling smart playlists with a limit to items not working

Server Version#: 1.18.1.1973
Player Version#: Web: 4.10.1, Windows: 3.104.2, Android: 7.23.0.13123

A smart playlist created with a limit to items is not working correctly if shuffled.
The playlist will ignore the limit and plays all filtered tracks. Really annoying bug. Can’t shuffle most of my playlists :frowning:

Very strange. I have a custom filter playlist (smart playlist) that only contains the top 60 most recent songs added to my library. Just this week, when I shuffle this playlist, it seems to add the rest of my whole music library to the play queue rather than just playing those top 60 songs on shuffle. Any one else have this? I have not yet tried turning it off an on again  maybe I should do that before complaining.

What were the exact parameters you used when setting the custom filter?

Actually yours is the second report I’ve seen today.

Out of curiosity, I set it up myself, and can reproduce the problem. I set a custom filter of Artist Style Is Ambient, and limited it to 10 items. I created the playlist, and if I use the regular Play command in the Playlist, the queue only has the 10 tracks that the filter produced. But if I use Shuffle, the queue has 72 tracks, which is basically ignoring the 10-track limit.

My filter is different, so I think the problem is specific to the Shuffle command and the track limit setting.

merging with other topic to keep things together.

Thanks for report. @mousman are you on 1.18.1.1973 as well?

That’s my build also.

I can reproduce this problem on my QNAP PMS 1.18.1.1973 and the Plex Web App 4.10.1.
I created a custom filter and limited the number of results to a few tracks, and created a playlist out of the results.

I went into the playlist itself and hit play and it works.
If I hit shuffle then it shuffles every match without respect to the limit.

Thanks for reporting this.

PMS Version 1.18.1.1973
Plex web Version 4.12.2 though I also see the same issue while playing through the android app. My exact filtered playlist is as follows: Sort Songs by date added, filter only songs above 1 star, and limit list to top 60 tracks. Its also worth mentioning that even before I save that as a playlist and an only looking at it in the filtered view, I still have the same issue. Putting that on shuffle, shuffles all music to play.
My solution thus far is to make the list, save the play queue as a temp playlist and shuffle that.

@BigWheel How is it looking? Is a fix to be expected?

Sorry, need to bump it.

Sorry I do not have an ETA on this.

Thanks for putting it on the list! At the moment, its a mild annoyance.

Instead of using player shuffle, create playlists that are always shuffled.

playing one of these playlists (not shuffling it) will keep the track limit.

Any updates? Would like to properly use my playlists again…

Should be in 1.18.6, which should be out soon, but I don’t have an exact ETA

Alright thanks for letting us know! Looking forward to the update

I installed 1.18.6.2368, but the issue is still happening.

In build 1.18.6.2368, I did the following:

  • Library view set to ‘Tracks.’
  • Set a custom filter of Artist Style Is Ambient (72 tracks from 6 albums by 4 artists meet this filter)
  • Added limit of 10 items.
  • Opened playlist and clicked ‘Play.’
  • Viewed Play Queue while playlist was playing.
  • Stopped playback and hit ‘Shuffle.’
  • Viewed Play Queue while playlist was playing.

This resulted in a playlist of 10 tracks, which happened to be all from one album. The play queue created when I hit ‘Play’ matches the playlist, but when I hit ‘Shuffle,’ the play queue lists only 10 tracks (respecting the limit), but it lists 10 entirely different tracks (which also happen to be from the same artist).

I initially guessed that the Shuffle command was still considering all 72 tracks, but I wouldn’t expect that to result in all 10 tracks from another album by the same artist. And the shuffled queue has the same 10 tracks from another album every time I hit Shuffle, which also doesn’t fit.

The thumbnail that Plex creates for the playlist also seems to consider all albums that fit the filter without the 10-track limit. This may or not make sense, but I thought it might provide a clue.
