I have used Plex for years for my own local media. I now want to give a friend access. I have searched around but find nothing that explains in simple terms how to add a user and provide remote access. How to tell someone where to find my server? (In fact, where can I find my server?)
I get the feeling that everyone who has used Plex for a while probably knows all this but it’s very daunting when you start.

The user adds him/herself, by creating a plex.tv user account for themselves, over on https://plex.tv (“Sign Up”)
Once this user account has been successfully created and the email address that is connected with the new account has been verified, you can invite the user to share your media.
If the user is a member of your immediate family, you can also add him/her as a “managed user”. But doing so will tie your user accounts together much closer than you might be comfortable with. So inform your self first about the implications before doing so. https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/features/plex-home/
You don’t need to. After enabling remote access to your server, any Plex app which is logged into a plex.tv account with access permission to your server will find your server automatically.
As explained above. The most basic case is to open your web browser and go to https://plex.tv
Sign into your account, then open the hosted web app.
Provided, that remote access to your server is working as intended, you should see your server immediately.
Start by enabling remote access. The most important thing for that is your internet connection. Some (often newer) contracts don’t provide you with a publicly routable IPv4 address for your router. But this is very important for remote access.
Go through the first 2 articles in the first link above.
Additionally read The Basics of Remote Access Troubleshooting if it doesn’t work.
If that still doesn’t help, ask your ISP whether they have put your connection behind a CG-NAT. And if they did, under which circumstances they are willing to disable CG-NAT.
Thanks for that! There is actually so much information that the first step on the path is not obvious!
Great information, but it assumes a level of knowledge I do not possess, On my media server I have remote access enabled. My daughter has a (free) Plex account and lives outside my home. I have set up my router to passthrough the port (using the default port for now).
My questions are:
- How do I set her up as a friend on the media server? I know her email address and Plex name (pretend it is “LollipopFortune”).
- Where does she set up my IP address and port on her (free) Plex? Or is this not needed since she would become a friend? If not needed then how does she reference my media server?
- Once LollipopFortune is a friend, is there a way to push a notification to her when I am doing system maintenance?
- Being a friend does not mean that you are sharing your media with that friend. Sharting is independet from the friend status.
- Was answered above. You don’t need to. Her client gets that information from plex.tv, if she’s entitled. Follow my first link above.
- no.
The question is: can you yourself access your server while out and about?
This is the first thing you need to verify before thinking about media sharing.
