After updating my iPhone 12 Pro Max to iOS 14.5 I tried out the new Siri “default” feature. When I asked Siri to play a specific song I was prompted to select which app I would like siri to play the music from. I select Plexamp. Siri started processing my request for a few seconds then stated, “Sorry, you’ll need to continue in Plexamp”.
Even if I asked Siri, “Play music by Basshunter in Plexamp”, Siri thinks about it then gives me the same message, “Sorry, you’ll need to continue in Plexamp”.
So I have tested both Siri features/commands with Plexamp closed, minimized, and opened with no luck. I reached out on Twitter and was instructed to open a new topic here in the forums. It also appears that someone else is having the same or similar problem with a posting titled, “Not working with new Siri “Default” player command”.
Seemed to fix part of the issue! After the change I asked Siri to play a song or artist without specifying the app and now i receive the following: “Uh oh, there’s a problem. Please try again.”
If I ask siri to play a song or artist on Plexamp, it now starts playing the song or artist. That has never happened before.
Something I have noticed. If the Plexamp app is closed and not running on iOS and I ask siri to play an aritst after selecting Plexamp as my default, it will not. Gives an error as mentioned before. If I open the Plexamp app so its running in the background then ask Siri to play an artist, it works just fine. Maybe thats an iOS thing?..
Now it seems to be working both ways. Maybe now its just a random iOS glitch. The change you had me make on my PMS seemed to resolve the issue. Thanks for the help and all the back and forth messages. Really nice to see this level of support.
Good day- After checking and verifying settings to include global searching, asking Siri to play music under Plex or PlexAmp results in a message on iOS 14.6 as “Plex hasn’t added support for that with Siri.” When asked to play music from Plex, HomePod 14.6 on a HomePod mini says “The app hasn’t added support with that for Siri”. Not sure what I’m doing wrong here. I’m on server Version 1.23.3.4707. Thanks in advance for any other suggestions!
It does not work with the HomePod (thanks, Apple!) but works fine on iOS devices if you’ve given it the permission. Also, Plex doesn’t have support for Siri, only Plexamp does.
OK, thanks for your fast reply! For iOS, I guess I’ll have to wait for another update from Apple to change the default to Plexamp, since there’s apparently no way to change it after it has been set once. Do you see HomePod /Siri support in the future? As everyone else here, I would love to just use Plex for all of my media, and only use iTunes for tagging and organizing files. Apple Music is nothing more than a sales engine, and ITunes just isn’t practical for maintaining large libraries, since it cannot auto-update based on folder and directory content changes like Plex.
You can ask Siri to play music on a different music service and sometimes that will shift the default. So if you’ve set Spotify as your default but want to change back to Apple Music, you can say “Hey Siri, play Fleetwood Mac on Apple Music,” or vice versa, “Hey Siri, play Fleetwood Mac on Spotify.”
So apparently just asking it to play on Plexamp a bunch of times should move it over.
I reached out to Apple, but haven’t heard back. You can also ask your iPad e.g. to play on the HomePod (so it’s the iPad playing, but AirPlay to the HomePod) and that should work.
