Skip Intro isn't working - Clean Server Install

I have set up a clean server to migrate over to. Boot drive failed (Plex installation drive) in my old server so why not set up new server with more storage capacity while I’m at it. The old server has been “unclaimed” and I am logged in the new server using my PlexPass account, same one I used for the old server. I am logged in to my players using my PlexPass credentials, however, there is not “Skip Intro” button on shows as I scan and migrate over to the new server.

Debian 11
Plex Version 1.25.6.5577
Generate intro video markers = as scheduled task and when media is added
Enable intro detection is checked under the appropriate libraries

Server and router have been rebooted. Analyze does a quick scan of the library, but still no Skip Intro.

If I mouseover the Activity icon in the upper right hand corner, It shows the scanning, downloading metadata, etc, and you can see a brief blip of a “Detecting Intro” thrown in there but its appearance is very, very brief whereas on the old server (running the same OS and Plex version) the “Detecting Intro” would be there but it would stay awhile as it transcoded the show on its own to detect where to place the skip markers.

Assuming you have checked the permissions and are analyzing during you scheduled task window.

In a terminal window type:

sudo journalctl -u plexmediaserver.service

This will give show you the activity of the server, if it keeps processing one file repeatedly you may have to hide or or remove it temporarily.

Uploading the logs will help.

Intro markers will certainly not be immediately available on a newly set up server.
Creating them does take quite a while. (can be days, weeks or even months with a large collection and a slow server platform)

Did you trigger Analyze on the whole library?
If so, this doesn’t trigger an intro scan. That only works when show is analyzed.

I have analyzed the library, the show, the season, the episode. Still, no Skip Intro on anything. I understand it takes awhile for Skip Intro to be created. On the old server, you could see a Plex Transcoder process running, under ‘top’, (even though there was no user logged in) as it was determining the Skip Intro markers. This no longer happens. Large collection, not at the moment since I am copying to the new server. Slow server platform? 4x Intel Xeon E7-4850 V2 12 Core 2.3Ghz ( 48 Total Cores)

Whereas I don’t think it’s a permissions issues as Plex can scan and play the libraries, I specifically added u:plex:rx to my root library folder and all sub folders, to no avail.

I did run sudo journalctl -u plexmediaserver.service and for the most part, all it says is “Generated new chapter thumbnails for XXXX”

So its certainly generating some intro markers…

however there are some errors and showing this one as an example …

Is this a real mkv file or maybe some dummy file ?

BTW… I’ve always found it best when setting up again from scratch to just let the butler nightly tasks take care of the heavy back-end tasks like this intro detection. Took approx 40 maintenance hours on my server to complete this with some 25,000+ episodes. Trying to force it never really worked until its completed its first initially pass.

That’s a real mkv file. Don’t ask, I won’t tell. Not everything do I watch.

This can be closed. My server has been up for ~$ uptime up 10 days, 21:36 and you pointing those out in the logs, and tonight is the first I’ve seen it transcoding to detect intros. No one’s currently watching anything and low and behold:

319125 plex 20 0 61636 21876 10244 R 102.0 0.0 0:08.84 Plex Transcoder
318734 plex 20 0 3156 1856 1248 R 91.8 0.0 1:53.24 EasyAudioEncode

tail -f /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/Logs/Plex\ Media\ Server.log is definitely an interesting watch, especially when someone starts watching something, transcoding or not. Just don’t blink!

@OttoKerner @pl_5309 Thank you, for your responses as well. I apologize if I came across as crass in my reply. Yeah, I knew not to expect it to detect intros in one go and that it could take days/weeks for everything but I was used to seeing some sort of visual cue that it was detecting intros when I manually updated the libraries. And for as little space as I’m using at this time (while things are slowly being pulled in from a remote mirrored server) I wouldn’t have thought it would take so long before there was a visual cue. To be honest, until dokuro pointed out in the logs, “IntroDetector”, I would have had no idea to even know what to have searched for in the logs anyway.

Thanks again!
