Slow downloads using the new 'Downloads' feature

The problem is that the new download service on IOS and Android I think also downloads files in a loop.
And the more you put the more it increases you have to do the series one by one
I deleted everything on Plex iPad gave back all permissions and it’s the same result
I have another iPad mini where everything was working and suddenly I have the same problems
It would be nice if Plex told us if it identified the problem and if it is working on it

Don’t keep your hopes up.

You’d think the capability to download stuff to your device would be a priority issue for them to resolve on their media server software.

On Jan 11 the issue was identified. Problem still not resolved by mid May.

Actually, they did release some fixes, but for iPhone only. I’ll be posting my logs soon because a 3GB movie is taking over 3 hours to be downloaded on Android, and based on speed tests (both ends) it should be taking less than 10 minutes

Just adding that I’m also experiencing really slow downloads on IOS - music specifically. Downloads set to original. Way slower than the old sync.

EDIT - from a quick look at the console, looks like it’s slow because it keeps downloading the same file multiple times before moving into the next one

Here is another example when on a very good WIFI connection, the same iPad, in the same location, downloading the same file, gives very different results between Plex and Infuse players. Both client and server on same local network segment.

I can repeat this type of result constantly, in fact this test Plex did better than normal at the start of the transfer, where Plex client download speed is less than 50% of Infuse.

Whatever fixes they have released still don’t work downloading stuff.

Absolutely ridiculous

@anon18523487 I spent some time trying out different options with this to try to narrow down where the problem might be.

Server version: 1.27.0.5897 running on Ubuntu 20.04.4
iOS App version: 8.4 running on iOS 15.5

I can reproduce the issue on 2 different iPads and 2 different iPhones.

I focused on using one of the iPads. It is an iPad Pro (12.9 inch) (3rd generation). I validated I was still seeing the 10 Mb/s cap when downloading over wifi. But when I plugged in a USB-C ethernet adapter I confirmed that I was no longer seeing the throttling and I was seeing transfer speeds between 600 and 800 Mb/s.

I ran some packet captures on the Plex server while doing both the wired and the wireless transfers but I didn’t see significant differences between the two aside from the amount of data.

To confirm that my wifi is more capable than 10 Mb/s, on the iPad I opened Safari and downloaded a few files from the Plex web UI and received transfers up to 300 Mb/s consistently.

I also tried making some changes to the server network settings that might be related and nothing I found made any changes to the transfer behaviour.

The transfer speeds are reported on the Plex web-UI dashboard.

At this point I think it is safe to confirm this specific issue isn’t client device specific or wifi/network problems. The wired/wireless difference is interesting and makes me think this might be related to the specific library/iOS API that the Plex client is relying on to schedule the transfer when the app gets backgrounded. It might also be combining with server OS specific network configuration to generate this problem as not every user is experiencing the limited transfer speed.

Please let me know if I can provide any more specific information or if there are more specific tests you’d like me to run.

I thought after a month or so that a few hundred songs had finally finished downloading, but the app seems to have a mind off its own - downloaded songs deleted and now re-downloading. Every time I go to the sidebar (if the app doesn’t crash which it frequently does when viewing the sidebar) it seems to have random values for “downloading x of y” every time. Also, how do you delete downloaded stuff?

Also frequently noticing a previous song still playing at low volume when skipping to another!

Still no updates on this and the Plex app is still useless on iOS. Dear lord, you’d think an app for a leading platform / OS would get more love.

Similarly here the download function does not work or is very very slow. I have a 1Gb/s connection

Still waiting for some sort of update on this. We even had a dev confirming it was an issue yet nothing was done about it. An app for a mobile device and a massive platform at that (iOS) failing at one of their main requirements (downloading media for offline use) and you’d think Plex devs would actually give a monkeys ass about it.

Instead we get discovery and crap channels.

Main problem is they know competition is behind them otherwise pretty sure they’d be up in arms to resolve the problem and actually meet paying users expectations.

Instead people raise issues here and they get mostly ignored.

@anon18523487 curious if you have any update perhaps?

Still seeing very slow downloads (no transcode involved) from my Plex Server to my iPad Plex client.

Speedtest.net test to internet from iPad is showing 1Gbps download speed.

From my locally hosted server, over a Wifi 6 network (no other devices connected, only my iPad). Would be nice to see some kind of movement on this.

Download with Plex client

Download with inFuse client

Plex download config:

Video Quality = Original
Audio Quality = Original
Download Format = Original

Running on MacStudio M1 with less than 20% CPU load, over Unifi network and wifi.

Plex Server Version = 1.30.0.6442 (MacOS / M1 Pro Arm)
Plex Client Version = 8.12.1
Plex Client = iPad Pro M1

I’m also continuing to see the same issue over mobile (iOS) connected to Wifi (5 Ghz). Incidentally, I am also on a Unifi network. Plex Desktop on a wired connection will download at 500 Mbps (max throughput).

Server Version: 1.30.1.6497
Internet Speed: 1 Gbps

This is still not resolved as of the 29th of December. Was raised in Jul 21. Amazing customer support!

Checking the thread, it looks like Plex were able to repro. the issue at the start of January 2022 but not seeing anything since.

Do we have any update on this?

There have been posts through out the past year, advising the issue is still present.

Nope, still not resolved.

I test once in a while in the hopes I can finally take my media on the plane (as I should be able to according to plex). Nope, no way Jose!

Despite the fact the issue was acknowledged, it still remains, as of today, an issue!

Have you tried with the latest version of PMS? Also which client are you using? There is still an issue with iOS that we haven’t been able to track down the cause.

Latest version of PMS on iOS. I guess that answers my question then

Hi MovieFan,

I’ve tried this again just now with the latest version of the iOS app and a freshly upgraded Plex Media Server. The details in my last update from June of 2022 otherwise still apply Slow downloads using the new 'Downloads' feature - #129 by JacksonB

I am seeing a 5Mb/s transfer speed when remote over wifi to the Plex iOS client on my phone. I set my client settings for “Original Format” instead of “Maximize Compatibility” to limit any CPU bottlenecks. At the time of testing, there are two active streams on my Plex Server combining for another 40Mb/s.

If I cancel my Plex client download and try to download the same file from the Plex web-ui in Mobile Safari, the Plex Server dashboard reports speeds past 250Mb/s. This can likely go higher but my work guest wifi is throttling here.

I am not able to immediately test the USB-C wired ethernet dongle until I’m home this evening but from what I can tell right now, iOS client download speeds are still an issue.
