Slow scanning of TV Shows on remote SMB Shares

This is a recall of a previous post (here) that never got resolved.

Here is a shot of the Alerts window as this started at 16h08 today.
It’s now 17h00 as I type this, and this scan is still going.

The issue is the same basic details as last time.

Although I do not have ‘Scan my library periodically’ enabled, PMS still scans the entire TV Shows library at least once a day. Sometime when it is doing this, it creates 95%+ CPU usage.

The TV shows library is made up of three SMB shares on the same external-to-PMS Windows Server 2019. I have stopped my backups to make sure it isnt that causing the file system changes.

If you look at the Plex Media Server.1.log, at Mar 30, 2021 16:07:18.950, you will see the beginning of the recognition of the need to scan due a change in files. But what is weird is that PMS logs Episode 1 for each season of each Show as having changed.

I don’t know what could be causing these file system changes. I’m not aware of anything in my environment that would cause that. One thing I did to eliminate causes was to unmonitor ‘The 100’ in my Sonarr setup so it wouldn’t update metadata files. Now I’ll remove it from Sonarr altogether to see if that helps.

Does anyone else have this sort of slow scanning happening? Any ideas as to what could be causing PMS to think the file system has changed on virtually all TV Show folders?

What folder(s) do you have set for the tv library? Your logs look like you have every show folder added separately.

When you say remote do you mean it is really at a totally different location or just on a different computer.

By ‘remote’ I mean that it is a different server on my LAN than the one PMS is running on.

I think you’re right, in that PMS appears to be detecting each individual show changes separately, and queuing them up for scanning. That’s why it shows as it does in the Alerts log, with ‘Scanning the “TV Shows” section’ between each folder. I’m guessing…

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this. It reliably does it every day, and it interferes with any shows that are transcoding at the time due to maxing our the CPU.
