Server Version#: latest version
Player Version#:latest version

HI! i am using a device with Android TV and live tv channels from my tvheadend in plex. i have some issues with audio even in some movies of media library.for example codec AC-3 dont working.

would be possible add in app option to choose decoding audio from software? i know its worse but that’s how all the audios work for me in other apps.

Thank you very much and greetings

What kind of issues are you experiencing with AC3? After replicating can you fetch the logs?

Steps for grabbing the logs are available here; Android, Android TV, Fire TV, Portal Logs | Plex Support

hi thanks for reply.

the device its a SBC odroid N2 with android TV 9 pie and the hardware does not decode AC3 audio and I think that some more

logging.txt (1.4 MB)

please help with this option in app

I have the same issues, some android boxes don’t have eac3 or ac3 licenses , but allow passthru. We need an option to force software decoding for eac3 and ac3 for Plex for Android TV

Pretty sure the Android app has an AC3 software decoder. I used it for a couple of years. I do remember though that sometimes codec support sometimes did not update like it was supposed to. I think the solution was to uninstall the plex app, re-install it and play a file with AC3.

i never see this option in app android TV. in any installation of this hardware worked AC3 with plex. other apps yes

It’s not an option. It just decodes the 5.1 AC3 to 5.1 PCM. My Android TV box was connected to my receiver with HDMI. Then receiver to TV with HDMI. If you’ve got your Android TV connected to your receiver with an optical cable, you will only get stereo because optical does not have the bandwidth for 5.1 PCM. You would need to pass through the AC3 through the optical to your receiver. Your TV would need to have the settings for that and they would need to be set correctly. And you would need to set plex option to passthrough to HDMI.

But I assure you that Plex does have an AC3 software decoder. I used it for 2 years. If what you really want is passthrough, that’s a completely different thing than wanting a decoder.

Now maybe there is something different about Plex and Android TV that stops the AC3 software decoder from installing. I’ve never owned an Android TV. But my TV box was operating the very same Plex app in TV mode and it decoded the AC3, despite not having a hardware AC3 decoder.

This has been an issue for years with Plex andriod client and AC3. Many boxes will not have sound.
Here is a link to the workaround as i just setup a new box and had to look it up to edit the file to get sound for
live TV with my HDHR’s.

Noticed the following line in the release notes for an 8.23 beta release of the Android App.

  • Player: ensure software decoders are downloaded

Perhaps a bug was introduced more recently that was preventing the software decoders from being downloaded. That might explain why it worked for me but not for you. Anyway, possible that things might be fixed up for you soon.
