SOLUTION: Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error

I have looked further into this. I was right in saying this should not happen now on Music libraries.

Months back the scanner for music changed to be in-line and not a separate process. The migration should have happened automatically and I do not know if it failed to migrate or you edited the music library settings to select the old scanner

If you go to the library setting for this music library (Manage Library / Edit / Advanced ) - scroll down to see what you have for Scanner and Agent

It should be ā€œPlex Musicā€ and not ā€œPlex Music Scannerā€ for both

We had an article written to cover the migration
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/upgrade-music-libraries-new-metadata-system/

This was using the old scanner - ā€œPlex Music Scannerā€
The new scanner is named ā€œPlex Musicā€

My earlier advice about splitting the library should be ignored. This issue does not arise for music libraries when using the current scanner

I am still running PMS Version 1.18.8.2527 with no issues.

I see new plex server have come out recently, but still concerned with updating.

Will my curl issue ever be addressed and if so will the release notes say so? Right now I can scan as much as a I want on 1.18.8.2527 without any issues. I can even scan b2b and have no issue whatsoever.

I would love to update, but not if scanning is going to crash my system or cause conversion failed issues for my users.

I also saw there is some new beta release for a new scanning system. I wonder if it would have the same curl issues as I am having on newer PMS versions?

The release note may mention curl and may mention dynamic ports exhaustion. In any case, I would post in the threads where the issue was seen that a fix is out - in your case I would a reply here Transcoding errors starting 2-3 days ago - #17 by sa2000

There is a forum preview release - not a beta release

It is available in this forum topic New Plex Media Server movie scanner and agent preview

It is a new scanner for movies libraries. I expect it to get round the problem because the scanning is done in-line by the Plex Media Server process and not a separate scanner process.

So we have music already covered by the new in-line scanner. This forum preview release covers movies. Photos were done much before. So this leaves TV Shows as potential issue

I keep getting this notification while streaming my music away from my computer at home. It actually doesn’t happen that much when I am by my computer, but I cannot stream a song while away from home. HOWEVER I noticed that if I happen to play a really long track, it will play when I’m at home, I can leave my house and it will still play until the end of the track. Once a new track begins I see ā€œConversion failed. Transcoder exited due to error.ā€

I have an Iphone, however my laptop uses a linux based operating system called Pop!_OS. I’m curious if this has anything to do with the error.

I sent you a download link for test build 1.19.6.3012 that has the latest curl release which came out few days ago with a fix for the tcp port exhaustion issue

Please try out and let me know how it goes

Interesting.

I think I was using ā€œplex music scannerā€ due to last.fm scrobbling.
Well, that should fix the music issue, at least.

Updating this forum thread with the current position regarding the curl fix that reduces number of ports used

See the following post and the my 3 other posts that follow it

Hi all,
IĀ“ve arrived here having the same problem of the title in all my libraries…
This is my setup:
Device: QNAP NAS: TS-453 Pro
PMS Version 1.20.2.3343 (it happens also in my previous version)

I“ve tried to restart PMS, update to latest version (above) and also restart the NAS itself.

All without results. Getting in all items the message of the title of the thread.

If you need some log or test to do just ask me.

Thanks

i started having this issue this last week. i had maybe updated pms, but as a rule i don’t update windows and thus there were no changes on the host computer. windows 10, server version 1.20.1.3252. after i read that some people were getting the issue from windows itself, i went ahead and did a full update, which did not fix the problem. would really appreciate some help with this. can only watch a few min at a time before it fails and exits.

bump. still having this problem.

And anyone that can help is likely still waiting on important detail.

The message in the topic of this thread is a generic one and can arise for many different reasons - each would need to be checked out through server logs - when running on the current version of Plex Media Server. See earlier posts re logs

Logs please

Is there a way I can send you my logs as well? (Edited, saw upload button and attached logs)
I’ve been taking updates to try for a fix but right now, every single thing I play exits with the same error.

It’s frustrating. I’ve been a subscriber for years and I’m thinking of jumping ship to another platform.

Plex is running on a Dell R730XD
It has two Xeon CPUs and 96GB ECC DDR4 with an nVidia P400 for transcodes. It’s not hurting for horsepower.

Versions:
Web: 4.43.4
Server: 1.20.5.3562

The only hitch is it’s running on Windows Server 2012 R2.

@sa2000
Any chance you can look at the logs I posted just above this post?
It’s to the point where I get this error on average multiple times in a single TV episode.

It’s driving my family and myself crazy.

I disabled hardware transcoding and it still had the same issue, which suggests that the issue isn’t hardware transcoding.

@sa2000 @anon18523487 (Literally just grasping at straws for support here)

Seems to be audio encoding related. Was just direct steaming video but downmuxing audio to stereo on a show and got the reviled transcode failure error a few minutes in.
