I KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF THESE TYPES OF POSTS. I READ A LOT OF THEM BEFORE MAKING THIS POST.
:Lifetime plexpass subscriber: For the past year everything has been going very well. No issues whatsoever. I just returned from a weeks long vacation. Everything worked great while we were away. We were able to download movies and shows before flights. My users had 0 complaints. Day after we get back about 10pm. I get a text that the server isn’t accessible. Sure enough outside network unavailable. Checked and truenas had updated and all of my apps had the ability to update. I assumed that is why it was broken. So I tried to update plex. I had some issues. First it said “dict expected” then eventually it said it needed to be in a stopped state. Even though it was in a stopped state. Eventually I was able to get it to update. Did not fix the issue. So I double checked the port forwarding policy. It was still in place. I did change the port and updated it in the app. Did not fix the issue. So I reverted to the first port I had set and changed it to match in the app. After that I reset all equipment. Att modem in passthrough, unifi gateway, server, pc, cellular device. When it came back up it started working again. Double checked on a couple of local cellular devices on cell network. It worked again. About an hour later I popped back in to check on it and voila. No longer available outside again. Rolled back all updates to plex and Truenas. Still no luck. I am not sure what to do at this point. Port forwarding in unifi is correct. I also checked upnp is still off. Just port forwarding. The only thing that is see in truenas in the plex app is the ability to put different apps on different networks. With that. No changes were made to the original working settings.
Have you tested if the port forward itself is working (e.g. using a service like canyouseeme.org?
I honestly just believed the router. After checking it says it is closed. I will delete that rule and make a new one. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.
Does the public ip recognized by canyouseeme.org match your router’s WAN IP and public IP recognized by Plex‘s remote access settings?
If the port forward is properly configured, there might be something interfering on your ISP side.
Yes, it all matches. Im not sure what would suddenly be interfering after it has worked for so long. Not to mention, after it stopped working it worked ahain for about an hour. Then, suddenly stopped again. I know not the spell or incantation to make it work again.
When you say “it’s working (for an hour)” – are you actually able to stream remotely or are you relying on the remote access status indicator showing that your setup is fine?
If you can actually stream, that sounds like there might be an issue with IP assignment. Do you haven an IP reservation for your PMS’s host inside your home network?
Yes it has a dedicated ip assigned to it. And yes I tested with two different cellular devices on the cellular network only. Both were able to stream and download. Before going to bed I checked to see if services were still up and they were local only. On unifi’s ui it does let me know that wan1 is behind NAT and the port needs to be forwarded on the upstream router. It is forwarded on the att gateway in passthrough as well.
Fixed it! Only took about 3-4 hours of digging around in my network. Working in reverse. The last thing left to recheck/reset was my att gateway. As I went to delete the forwarding rule on it I noticed it was now suddenly incorrect. Forwarded to the wrong host. Deleted the rule, then reset up the rule as it was before the issues and bada bing bada boom. I went back through and checked my forwarding on my unifi network as well. All was still good. Checked on plex and shows accessible outside network. Checked on outside source plex is fully working outside my network. Thank you very much for your insight and thoughts. It was much appreciated.
