This week started to not be able to connect to my QNAP Plex server from outside my network. My solution was to Disable Remote Access and to re-enable it, even though it was green “Fully Accessible outside your network”. That was working. Now It is red with Not Availible Outside your Network,.
I have:
Upgraded to latest Plex Server for QNAP
Rebooted QNAP.
When I Disable Remote Access and Re-Enable it, its Green for about 5 seconds then turns red. I also have tried the Manually Specify Port, nothing is working.
Unless Comcast is F-ing with me I have no clue. I am able to remoted log into my QNAP server no issues.
There’s also a guide with some more details on how to troubleshoot remote access issues. You’ll need the individual output of those troubleshooting steps to follow up.
Yes I looked at that article before posting. Nothing has changed on my side and I checked the router, everything looks fine. Im an IT professional with 25+ years so its not like I cant do the basic troubleshooting. The issue is that this server has been operational for 2 years no issues, so I can only assume it was an update on the Comcast side…
Well… you can verify.
e.g. by doing the troubleshooting step and test if your remote port is accessible from the outside of your home network (using a service like canyouseeme.org).
Port Forwarding with Comcast wont work with my static ip set, and Im not turning on DHCP for the server. Now Plex is green that im able to use Remote Access, but still not connecting.
Does it stay green for seconds or a few minutes only?
Plex “assumes” your remote access is working while it’s testing the connection – resulting in a green indicator while it might not actually be working.
Keep in mind your server should have a regular RFC 1918 local IP address (just mentioning it because you imply you’re assigning an own/independent IP address instead of going with an IP reservation using DHCP).
If the port forward isn’t working, this implies there’s either an issue on the side of your ISP or a bad router configuration (e.g. some typo in the port forward rule).
While my IP isn’t officially static, Comcast doesn’t change my IP unless they perform a restart of the cable plant I am served by (whenever there is a major service change) at around 2-3am.
All my machines have static LAN addresses (best when port-forwarding)
It wouldn’t be the first time that ISPs are putting their customers behind a Carrier-Grade NAT without prior notice.
And some of them don’t bother to use the designated IP range for CGNATs, so if your router doesn’t have a WAN IP from this range, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are not behind a CGNAT.
Sorry what I meant to say was my QNAP box is static, and doesnt show up in the list to setup port forwarding, I guess I would need to add it to reservations.
I was only going to try Port forwarding, I really dont understand why Plex stopped working as I stated its been fine for 2 years.
You have any options to test other then port forwarding?
I’m also Comcast here but I do things a little differently.
My setup:
The gateway (XB8) is in Bypass mode
The XB8 plugs directly into the WAN port of my router.
From there it goes to the switch (my LAN)
I manually specify a port in PMS
I specify the port (example: 54321) and forward to Server Lan IP:32400 (TCP)
My Router/firewall is good enough I don’t need anything on the Ubuntu host so Ubuntu’s firewall is off.
For you, the process will be similar
Using either the web browser to log into your gateway
– or the Xfinity admin app
Decide which external PMS port you want (from 32768 → 65534)
Follow the instructions here to create the port forward
On your QNAP, since it might also have a firewall, make certain it allows port 32400/TCP inbound connections
– OR –
you can turn the firewall off (if you trust the Xfi firewall… It is pretty good)
In PMS
– Settings - [Server] - Remote Access
– Manually specify port
– Enter the port number you decided to use in the box
– Tell PMS to retry.
At that point, you’ll see PMS disconnect and the spinner
It usually comes back quickly with the green indicator (it’s an optimist. lol)
Wait 10-15 seconds while it actually tests the connectivity
I’m having the same issue. After many, many months of no problems, starting a couple of days ago, I’ve no longer been able to access my server over the internet. I didn’t change anything. It just stopped working. I kept trying the same thing over and over to fix it (disable and then enable) and it started working once for about half an hour. And then it stopped working and hasn’t worked since.
I sincerely think it may be a Comcast thing. Manually specifying a port (and adding it to my XB8 gateway) didn’t help.
I’m just going to wait it out and hope that whatever Comcast did, they fix.
EDIT Feb. 22: I did a manual port forward and it worked this time. I don’t know why the automatic one stopped working. I don’t know why the manual started working. And I don’
t know how long it will keep working.
Was FINALLY able to setup Port Forwarding (XFINTY SUCKS!!!) stupid interface wouldnet allow me to reserve mac address to the correct IP!!! Not sure how I fixed it but I did.
Port forwarding did fix the issue, so, its a fing Xfinity issue for sure.
This is what helped my figure out my issue. Kept checking to see if the port was open. I haven’t forwarded a port on my Ubiquiti UDM Pro in a long time and forgot I had to set up a port forward and a firewall rule to match it. Once I got them both done and made sure the ports matched on the server it worked just fine without relay enabled. I have been fighting this for a week.
