[SOLVED] Remote Playback Issue – Plex Server Works Locally but Not Remotely

Server Version#: v.1.42.1.10060-4e8b05daf et v.1.42.2.10122-3749b980e
Player Version#: last, Nvidia Shield PRO 2019Remote Playback Issue

Hi everyone,

I’ve been having trouble recently with my Plex setup and I could use some help.

My Plex server is installed on a QNAP TS-453D with 32GB of RAM. The server is located at Location A, and I usually access it from Location B remotely from a Nvidia Shield PRO 2019. Everything used to work perfectly, but for the past few days I can no longer play movies remotely. It’s just beffer for ever. It’s like i didn’t have enough bandwith but the speed is not the problem here.

Here are some details:

  • Ports: Correctly forwarded (13400), Plex shows the server as “Accessible from outside”.

  • Playback settings: Both audio and video are set to Direct Play (no transcoding).

  • Local playback: When I’m at Location A and on the local network, everything works fine.

  • Remote playback: From Location B, I can access the Plex interface, browse the library, but videos won’t start playing, or maybe 1sec before it buffer again.

Nothing major has changed on my setup recently, except maybe a Plex update, so I’m not sure what’s causing this issue.

Has anyone experienced something similar or have ideas on what I should check next?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Your server HK***** is available on external port 32400, not 13400.

Check Settings - Server - Remote Access
Make certain you’ve enabled “Manually specify public port” with the correct value and “Retry”

As for buffering, you might be getting “relay” access (limited to 2 Mbps transfer speed)

Your server’s DEBUG logs ZIP file (while starting a playback) will show what’s happening.

What kind of internet connection is at Location B? Is it cellular based like Verizon’s 5G Home or satellite? There use to be a bug, not sure if it ever got fixed, where the app wouldn’t recognize these connections and would end up using the local settings so it might be trying a speed that the location can’t physically handle.

Hi. I just miswrote the port number it was correct.

I fixed the issue. I’m not so sure how however i’m sorry. What i did :

  • Tried the beta
  • Go back to the stable version
  • Remove UPNP from the router then reactive it.

Now it works … Thanks all.
