Some episodes of a TV series are messed up

Hi, I know the title is a bit weird but I really have no idea how to synthesize the problem.

In few words, I have shared on Plex all the episodes of The Mentalist which has 7 seasons.

Adding the files of the 7th seasons, Plex creates the folder of Season 7 on “The Mentalist” folder but at the same time recognizes those same files as some other episodes of some other series I don’t even have on my computer at all.

For example, The episodes from 7x1 to 7x3 are included in a folder of a hypothetical Dr House 7x1, 7x2 , 7x3; at the same time the episode 7x4 of The Mentalist is also included in a folder of The Walking Dead 4x14

If I try to play those episodes I will be watching The Mentalist.

I don’t really understand what could be interfering with it. Any thoughts?

Naming, or MP4 tags

Preparation:

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

The Meat

  1. Look up your show on TheTVDB
  2. Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like § : % *, simply leave them out.
  3. Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases. Add the (year) in parentheses of when episode 1 of season 1 of this show was aired.
  4. Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder. Show's Title (year) - s01e01 - additional info.ext (’- additional info’ can be left out)
  5. After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.

Hi, thank you and everyone who replied.
I have followed all the steps but, for some reasons, even after moving the folder out of plex sight and performing the Plex Dance nothing appeared to be different.
Surprisingly, indeed, it kept showing all the episodes like if they were still there even though I could obviously not be able to play them.
This said, I deleted the Show from the list, created a new one with the same name, shared the folder again and it all got fixed.
The one thing I changed, this time, is that I kept all the files in one single folder rather than having the episodes divided per season.

Thank you all again!

Bad idea if you later want to add external subtitles.

If you remove all files from a library, the Plex Dance will fail. You must leave at least one file in there.

isn’t it better to keep all he files belonging to the same series in one single folder without any sub-folders?
The reason why the Plex Dance failed is now clear though, thanks

Please show a screen dump of the files, so we can see the exact naming

hi dane, the problem is solved.
By storing all the files in the same folder and removing all the sub-folders as well as starting a new TV Show brand new rather than working on the old one I could manage to solve whatever was wrong, but thank you very much

Not so.

By dropping season folder, you are creating new problems

No, it is not. It is better to stick to the officially valid file naming and folder organization: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220687-naming-series-season-based-tv-shows/

I see, then I will try to divide it all into seasons and see what happens.
By the way the files are named as follows:

The.Mentalist.5x20.Dolcetti.Di.Velluto.Rosso.ITA.WEB-DLMux.XviD-UPZ

That naming is totally WRONG and doomed to eventual failure. It may work for some series and some time BUT it will fail eventually. The proper naming for that file is:
The Mentalist - S05E20 - Optional Episode Name.ext” If you must include the trash at the end of that file name place it at the end of the filename in square brackets so Plex will ignore it.

will fix them all as I add new series. thank you for your advice! really appreciated
