Some new albums returning artwork from an album called "Undefined"

Hey!

Just added some new music into my collection today, and I have had a whole host of albums return album art from what looks like an album called “Undefined”

I added music to my library yesterday and didn’t encounter this.

I have double checked the metadata, and none of this is embedded, nor is the artwork in the folder of the problem albums.

If i was to hazard a guess, the scanner is finding no artwork assigned to these albums, but rather than passing a null value at some stage, it is now passing a literal string called “Undefined”

undefined looks like the name of the album of that art, it happens to lots of folks, including myself, with utterly different art.

This is the first time it’s happened for myself, and I’ve a fairly large album collection and been using plex for music for a few years too. Do you know if there is a fix for it? I also noticed just now that the scanner has downloaded both “Undefined” and the actual album art, but has set “Undefined” as the default:

you could try ‘refresh metadata’ on the album, or artist, or as you have screenshotted you can manually choose a different art.

the sledge hammer approach is to unmatch/fixmatch > rematch

or ‘plex dance’.

Something’s amiss, we’ll look into it.

Refresh Metadata hasn’t made a change, nor the plex dance. Manually changing seems to be the only option at the moment

possibly/semi-related, if plex doesn’t find art and/or unmatched albums with no art, plex tends to substitute the album art and use the artist art.

That’s something I’ve noticed as well, and is desirable for myself if the artwork is missing.

Judging from Elan’s reply above though, looks like this might be an issue elsewhere! Glad to know I wasn’t going crazy

insert ‘neo’ voice > WHOOaaaahhh

I just refreshed the above artist and boom I got one of the exact same undefined images.

The “undefined” album art is a bug on our side, I’ve filed a high priority bug to fix.

The reason why refreshing makes it appear is because we’re passing it back from cloud metadata incorrectly.

because that ‘undefined’ image looks pretty cool, I spent several minutes trying to find the actual album or artist which uses it, or where it came from, and still haven’t found it anywhere.

Reverse image search brought up this:

Nice, the googlefu is strong with you! Thanks!

I have had album art, and in some cases artist pictures as well as bio replaced by this for about 20-30 albums, many of which have been in my library for years. While we wait for a fix, what is best to do for the fix to work? Leave them alone? Unmatch them so that the original album art will come back? Something else?

I noticed if you go the album and edit it, the scanner has downloaded both the “Undefined” one and the original, so I’ve just been manually swapping over and refrained from adding anything in the library until the fix is in production

in the last couple of days i did a complete reinstall of raspberry pi OS and PMS and have had this exact same issue, where it wasn’t happening immediately before this reinstall.

it happens with both album metadata (pulling undefined’s album art for their album “undefined”) as well as artist metadata. i’ve tried refreshing the library metadata a couple of times, but to no avail (see the repeating artist pic in the screenshot below) - the only way to seemingly fix this at the moment, is to manually go into each artist/album and fix the match, which isn’t really feasible on a large library.

glad to see that it’s not just me, and i’ll eagerly be looking out for updates on a resolution of this

I’m having the same problem with both artist images and album covers. I have over 3000 albums in my library, so manually changing images seems crazy to me. I also don’t want to update all the metadata without the assurance that it will solve the problem, as it will take hours. Could someone please let us know when this problem has been solved?

When the cloud-side problem is fixed, will there be a process to clean up our libraries? The Plex interface doesn’t appear to let you remove the artist poster image at all. So is there really no choice but to live with this image on a majority of my artists; or go manually find an image of my choice for every single one?

I’m working on a way to remove the artwork via a script as an incase scenario, but I’m really not sure of the kind of effect it would have (if any) on the database as a whole, though I have had success with my own “Similar Artists” application that pulls down similar from last.fm

I’m very interested in your method for pulling similar artists in from last fm!
