Some Plex library users reporting watery or very low resolution image

Server Version#:1.18.2.2058
Player Version#:4.14.2

Hi Plex community, wondering if someone can render advice or offer any suggestions as to my current predicament.

I have approx 10 remote users hanging off my library and some of them (not all) are reporting very low almost unwatchable resolution on movies. A kind of ‘watery’ image. Other users are reporting no issues at all so I have suggested the following to the affected users:

  • check their video quality settings
  • reboot their modem
  • sign out then back in again

My local players (Nvidia Shield, Roku player, mobile devices using Chromecast etc…etc…) on my home LAN have no issues at all so I’d really like to help some of my remote users and fix the problem for them (again - other remote users reporting no issues at all).

For what its worth the remote users that are affected are all using players (apps) on smart TV’s or media players such as Apple TV 4th Gen.

For some background my system is a 4-bay (16TB) Synology NAS hooked up to a 64 bit i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz with 16 GB of RAM. I’m on the NBN with roughly 100 down & about 40 up most of the time and have port forwarded my Plexserver on my modem which is a Ubiquiti Amplifi HD mesh router system

I’m not very technical and I haven’t changed much in my server so I’ll just rattle off some Plex settings in the hope someone might see something that’s not right:

My internet streaming quality is set to 10 Mbps, 1080p, my Transcoder quality is set to ‘Automatic’, buffer at 60 and ‘hardware acceleration when available’ box is ticked. Maximum simultaneous video transcode is set to 8

In my Network tab, ‘Enable server support for IPv6’ box is ticked and Secure connections is set to ‘Preferred’

So have I got too many users hooked up to my library? Is it perhaps a bandwidth issue? At most I’ve had 4 simultaneous movies playing but most of them are direct playing anyway? Wondering if it’s something to do with my modem or network settings?

I’m happy to check anything else not mentioned here if someone has an idea as to a possible fix

As I said earlier, not all my remote users are having issues, only some.

Thanks in advance guys and apologies for the non-technical less then helpful info!

Robbo
