Hi,
I helped a friend of mine to set up a new server when his old windows Plex server died. He had a limited budget so he got a not so powerful machine.
Intel(R) Core™ i7-10810U CPU @ 1.10GHz 1.60, 16GB Ram. He has a very good internet provider (Fiber 1 gig up and down) so his machine is connected via ethernet and speedtest confirms 1 gig up and down at all times.
But now when a friend of his plays content remotely, he gets a lot of buffering and also a message that the file resolution is too high.
My friend only has 1080 contact, a lot of 720. I wonder if I have configured the server correctly and I wanted some advice what settings i should maybe tweak (if any) to improve this situation.
I set transcoding quality to automatic, default throttle buffer is 60, very fast for background transcoding, HDR tone mapping is checked and use hardware-accelerated video encoding is also check all others unchecked.
FW ports are certainly open.
I also wonder if this is a plex server issue or maybe the issue is on the other end.
thanks
claus
step 1: try to figure out what’s actually causing the buffering
primary causes should show on the server dashboard’s now-playing section → check for Remote vs. Indirect streaming and any significant transcoding. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200871837-status-and-dashboard/
step 2: if the playback is listed as Indirect you should verify the remote access configuration of their server.
I’m not familiar with this particular error message – it almost sounds like the client is trying to play a video in its original quality that somehow exceeds what the TV is capable to deal with… though that seems odd when it comes to 1080p and 720p content.
