Recently been having a lot of issues with my Plex library. Running on Unraid. Two issues:
Many movies and tv shows will take a while to load on Google Chrome and once they do, they will skip forward in small increments. For instance 28 Days Later skips forward 20 seconds at the 3 second mark, then 5 seconds or so continually. Some movies are fine. Also, it only affects older movies. Any movie I have added recently play fine. And all movies play perfectly fine on Firefox and Apple TV, however not Roku, which is #2
No older movies will play on a Roku. Even the older movies that work in Chrome, do not work on a Roku. I get “Playback Error - Playback has stopped due to multiple playback errors. Please check your connect and try again.” Again, newer added movies all work fine, although one movie would not play when direct play was disabled.
I have added my logs below. The issues with #1 and #2 should be documented pretty recently in them in the past 10 minutes or so from downloading them. I suspect though that this may be a database corruption issue?
I will also note that seemingly all tv shows play fine on Roku, however some TV shows that play fine on Roku have the same issue on Chrome, but again, not the newer ones. Also, I just optimized my database, and while doing that, deleted/re-downloaded Plex on Roku, and also restarted my Plex container. No dice, same issue on both ends.
Update: I updated Plex to the newest version, and now Roku seems to be working fine. Chrome still doesn’t work. What I did manage to figure out though is that the files that Chrome doesn’t like are all H264, however newer H264 media still plays fine.
I am still perplexed though why newer H264 files played fine. I still worry there is a database corruption issue that I have only managed to circumvent. Any guidance would be appreciated.
In the past day or so I’ve started to experience skipping of about 7 seconds on a pretty regular basis on the following platforms:
Ubuntu 24.04, Chrome (latest), default window and incognito, with and without any plugins, Firefox no plugins normal and private window
MacOS (latest), Chrome and Firefox, no plugins.
The points at which the video skips are repeatable; that is, I can scroll back to say 17:53 and watch the video skip forward at 17:57 to 18:05 or 18:06. The underlying video file plays just fine in VLC.
Using the Plex App on a Samsung TV, Android phone, and iPad doesn’t express the same behavior.
I’ve tried various quality, direct play settings, etc.. I’ve installed the latest PMS (1.41.8.9834-071366) on the Ubuntu media server.
i have had this issue (6-7 second skip) for many years. always an issue using chrome (windows). server has always been truenas (core(2021-last month), now latest scale version). plex really puts the chrome version as lowest priority. sometimes forcing transcoding to lower quality helps but not always. seems to be unhappy with the specific codec if i were to guess
