Sony Android TV Plex will not play videos but chromecast works

Server Version#: 1.24.4.5081
Player Version#: 8.24.0.28408 (a22828ef)

Sony Android TV Plex will not play videos but chromecast works.

Plex will just turn the orange circle, most of thr time it does not work. It has been like this for months.

Also it will not play the next video in a series, screen just goes black.

Plex has added so my features they broke just playing videos.

My Sony TV which is an X900H always had problems with the native Plex app. I finally ended up just getting a Shield because as I have learned the only TV clients that are worth a damn are the Shield and the Apple TV. Everything else seems to have weird issues or annoying compromises. My Chromecast with Google TV is pretty good, but it has issues with TV shows crashing it occasionally from a known bug. Plex restarts new Google TV Chromecast - Plex Players / Streaming Devices - Plex Forum If you can swing it I would just say get the Shield TV Pro (not the tube, I guess it has problems with high bitrate content), or the Apple TV 4K. These issues exist not because Plex adds to many features but because the manufacturers of the clients cause the issue most of the time.

Blkbyrd thanks for the suggestion for the Shield Pro or Apple TV 4k. I will think about this. As the TVs apps you install do not always play nice with Dolby Vision like Disney+, does the Shield pro have the option to turn off Dolby Vision?

The Sony Android TV got an update quite a while ago, this problem didn’t start after that update but many months later. Very frustrating.

I assume the Chromecast /w Google TV would have the same issues?

The only Chromecast issue I have ever had was the one listed in that thread I shared. It works great about 95% of the time for Plex and basically 100% of the time for everything else. It really is an excellent little device. That issue can be avoided by manually selecting each episode of a show you want to watch. The Shield absolutely has the ability to turn off Dolby Vision. It is far and away the most powerful streaming box out there in just about every category. The solution I have came up with is to use a Shield TV Pro on my main television that doubles as my pseudo home theater because of the Shield’s huge compatibility with file type and massive advantage in raw power over all the other options. On all my other TV’s I use Chromecasts with Google TV.

Good info.

The TV is the 900F series, menus usable.

Have another Sony, the previous series, UI is almost unusable.

I wonder if there is a new Sheild coming out?

Been experiencing this as well. It sucks.
The main goal of the app is to play videos but in many many cases recently it just won’t do it.

I experience this problem also recently.
I have found that if I switch off the power to my tv (by pulling out the power plug) and turn it on again then it can play videos again.
I didn’t use to have this problem, it always worked before.
So I am thinking something in the player have changed. I know my tv has not changed for many years.
And when this problem happens, the plex control panel shows that the server is playing the video, but my tv just has a black screen.

Am just trying plex on my 2015 Sony 4k for the first time. New plex server on synology to replace old PC that was being used as server. Vio playback from plex is completely unwatchable. Green bar across top of video, juddery playback and audio seems duller

Time to invest in a better client unfortunately. Top suggestion would be Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 (not the tube) or Apple TV 4K 2nd Gen specifically (the first gen remote blows). After that I really like my Chromecast with Google TV and it sounds like between Plex, Google, and the SOC manufacturer they may have fixed the only real bug that existed on it making it a phenomenal client once that update is pushed through. I’ve heard good things about the Fire products but I used a Fire Stick 4K for a short bit and didn’t really like it.

Sigh, yes, been thinking that. Currently the only thing that works well is the 6 year old PC and plex web. PMP isn’t great but is being discontinued in favour of HTPC. Tried it and it is better but video still juddery. Plex web works grand, very weird as that’s plex web on the same PC…
Will have a look at Shield, not apple, and maybe a new Google TV dongle as TV still great otherwise

I am having the same problems as OP with my Sony TV. I bought a Nvidia Shield TV and it has the same problems. It appears it’s a known issue with Plex Android app.

I have a Sony XBR85X900H and an Nvidia Shield Pro 2019. I haven’t had these issues on either. The Shield has a bug with audio and video being out of sync at the beginning of videos, but as far as I know that the active issue with the device. Also I’ve spent a lot of time on these forums and have not seen this issue raised ever, so I’m not sure how its a “known issue with Plex Android app”.
