Shield Player Version#: 8.7.2

Starting 10-12 days ago (very close to the Android 8.7.2 release date) I became unable to play any video or audio content from my Plex server or any of my friends’ Plex servers (all on 1.20.3.3437) from any Android based device (my phone or my 2017 Shield TV). I am able to play all content from all servers on web and iOS.

I have deleted all caches, rebuilt all metadata, turned off any transcoding all to no avail. It doesn’t seem to be a problem with my server or any of my friends’ servers.

I can stream content from Plex’s 3rd party sources but nothing from my own server.

I’ve been using Plex for years and this server has been running for months with no issue. I’ve changed nothing in my setup and suddenly after the Shield and Android clients updated I cannot play back any content.

Is anyone else having this issue recently (I’ve read about it happening before)? Can anyone offer any suggestions aside wait for the next client update that hopefully fixes this?

Thanks

Same deal for me. Although it’s not all files for me. Started a week or 2 ago, some new files play, others throw the same error.

Same here. This latest Plex update on the shield is horrible. I can watch my media from every other device without issue but ever since this update it’s been sporadic at best. I’ve resorted to uninstalling the patch which falls back to Plex v5 and I can then watch my media again. Unfortunately the shield keeps updating it back to the latest version however so I have to keep uninstalling it each time I want to watch something.

@Aygis interesting! Which files work for you? I tried H264, HEVC, FLAC, WAV.
@LochNessMonster Yeah exactly. It’s brutal.

I assume it’s not happening to every Sheild 2017 owner since I imagine there would be a huge thread about this otherwise right? So what am I missing? Is there a solution that I don’t know about?

Thanks for your replies!

So I found out that this happens exclusively with H264 4.1 High videos. I’ve seen this issue crop up in the past with Plex but it looks like it has returned.
@Plex anything I can do aside from wait for a fix on Android and Shield?

Same here, any user way to fix?
I tried 8.8.1.21331 beta - still does not work

Another +1 here.
I was watching Plex fine yesterday, and today I can’t play anything on my 2020 Shield, or Android Plex app. Plays fine through web though.
EDIT: I just deleted the Plex app from the Shield and reinstalled it (8.8.1.21332), and it’s playing fine now.
Still not playing through android app though…

I just factory reset my Shield and updated the Plex app to latest again and it still won’t play anything back from my server unless I downgrade the Plex app every day.

What gives? Is no one else seeing this aside from the few people here who have posted? How is this not a much bigger topic?

@Plex are there any mods watching?

I’m running the plex media server on a windows 10 laptop and I’m running into this problem while attempting to watch any of my media through my fire tv app. Is there a way to fix this? Or are we still waiting for plex to figure out a fix for this?

Windows 10 Plex server. Getting this error while trying to start playing a video on my android phone and android TV. This is on content that was working yesterday.

Hi, I’ve been running Plex on my 2017 Shield TV since… well, probably 2017. Running the latest version on Ubuntu Server without issue. Did the Shield OS update and hit the same problem. Cleared all local files and signed in, same. Uninstalled all updates back to 5? Worked fine.

@didgeridoodle it’s not limited to h264.

In short, I’m confirming that there’s a problem.

Also started happening to me today on my Sony Android TV. Work around for me seemed to be to disable the new player. Some videos are crashing the old player so this isn’t ideal. Also seems to be doing the same thing on my fire TVs

Same issue here all videos are buffering across all my android devices nvidia shield, 4k fire stick and Samsung note 20. Deffo seems to be an android issue.

If I play through Windows 10 everything works perfectly fine. I really hope they fix this soon as I can’t get anything to play now.

I have the same issue. I’ve noticed it yesterday that no videos are playing with a new player on 2019 shield tv. Enabling old player partially fixed the issue, some videos are still not working. Tried reinstalling plex app and it didn’t help…

Mine has randomly started to work normal again. I have no idea how or why as nothing was updated or changed. Strange

Disabling the “new player” got everything working again for me. It seems recent versions of the app come with both the new player and the old player, but you can choose which player to use.
Plex app on Amazon Fire TV (android).
Changed app settings:
Plex app > Settings > Advanced > Enable new video player > Off

I have this issue also. Can’t play videos on Samsung Galaxy S20+ or nVidia Shield TV.

All other devices seem to work fine.
