Sony Bravia (Android) - Plex application won't run

I have a Sony Bravia TV (Android-based) and over the last month Plex might startup and work and sometimes would just end on startup. Over the last few days, it won’t run at all. I’ve tried clearing cache and clearing data. I’ve not tried an uninstall / re-install yet. I just installed an update on my Mac mini server.

Should I try rebooting the TV? Get an update on the TV?

At this point Plex is unusable and looking for what is the key issue (not sure how to get logs on the client) and how potentially to solve it. I’m technical so happy to debug.

You’re not alone:

Has there been any further information on this as i am suffering too

a re-install of the app does work but only once. as soon as you close the app and open again it crashes

I’m having the same issue over the last couple weeks.

If I uninstall it will work once. Then every time I open it, it will crash during launch back to the android tv menu. Same versions as listed above.

I, too, am having this issue. soft reseting the device sometimes allows it to kick over to the UI from the loading screen. I am going to try reinstalling the app on the tv at some point.

(edit: I too have the Bravia 4k tv… also, i did uninstall and reinstall to good results on the initial opening of the application then subsequent opening of the app leads to the error.)

Totally an App issue that happened with a recent update, and Plex should fix ASAP…
The silence over this is deafening.

Makes me wonder why I keep paying… Maybe I won’t if it’s not fixed in the next 2 days…

Yep, same issue here. I fought with this a while.
Then did the APP uninstall, remove device from plex server and start again fresh.

Seems to run throughout the day for some reason, but when i open it up the following day, blammo, just crashes.

Deleting the cache seems to be a quick fix, but now, thats not even working for me.

I was about to get a plex pass, but, if i cant even get this to work on my main tv, i cant see myself wasting money on this.

Is there a way to troubleshoot this further? Log files stored anywhere?

Might as well go back to kodi.

I seem to be having the same issue as well . Tried starting the app from the app store which worked oddly when the main menu wouldn’t launch the app. removing the app and installing it again seemed to temporarily resolve it for me.

Side note it seems to think that its not on the same local network as my Plex server and insists on converting my 4k content down because the network connection is too slow. then it says my Thread ripper doesn’t have enough power to convert 4k to 1080p 4Mbit

interesting note, my Sony bravia (that has been having the problem) just ran a new system update, and plex has started working again.

I’ve had the same luck with the cache clear, Or Clear Data and re-linking.

Took 4 goes tonight so I’m watching everything I can before changing to something else
Plex for Android ,BRAVIA 4K 2015 Current version (Not got the version to hand)
Server - 1.16.1.1291
Running Sony’s May security update Android 7 which was released this last week

Cheers

I guess if i had a plex pass, I would be persisting 4 times also.

I did do a system update on the TV, its set to automatic.

I tried PLEX again and it crashed again. I quickly checked it this morning and can see it wants me to login … so not sure or why that happened.

I’ll do a full remove app from tv, config from server, shutdown the lot and start it all from fresh again. This will be the last time.

Just to be clear, I have two other android TV’s that run it fine, these are samsungs tho. Ipad’s, Phones, PCs, everything works except this Sony Bravia, which just so happens to be my main tv.

Some basic response from PLEX would be nice on this, as it stands, it just doesnt work and I cant justify wasting hours troubleshooting this.

i have same problem on my sony bravia 4k 55 inch, the app opens then crashes before the home screen displays. clearing the cache will get it to start once but maybe plays a video before crashing. all other devices work. definitely a app related issue. is there some way to roll back to stable version?

Heres a quick process - and really the only process you can do

Clear the cache/data
Force stop the app
Uninstall the app

Check there is a system update for the TV, there was one for mine a short while ago

Full poweroff the TV
Go to plex server and remove the entry for your TV.

At this point your TV and PLEX should know nothing of each other
Power-up the TV and re-install the app and link to plex server.

Thats the best I have at the moment.

I have ben having the same problem. I tried all the suggestions but no fix. What I have tried is opening it through My Apps in Google Play. This works. And when I exit Plex I can open the app normally from my Home screen.

Also having exact same issue on my Bravia after latest update.

Same issue for me. Clearing cache and restarting the TV seems to intermittently fix it. But only maybe 3 out of 5 times. All other apps (Mobile, PC, Tesltra TV) work fine. Very frustrating.
