Server Version#:
Player Version#: Sony AG8 android TV up to date.
Hi,
So have a Raspberry Pi4 as a Plex server (ethernet to router -> wifi > TV). I have the Plex player on TV set to play original, so no transcoding is done.
My issue is as follows, when playing 4k movies the stream stops, pauses and then starts again every few seconds. However certain 4k content streams flawlessly. I have looked at the bit rates, the higher bit rate files streamed fine the lower one was pausing.
I have used the TV on 24.ghz and 5ghz connections same issues on both. I am just lost as to what makes certain files unplayable and others fine ( eg Manadorlian 4k hdr fine, jack reacher movie 4k hdr unwatchable)
I’m just lost as to what to do to diagnose the issue, all SD content works perfect.
I had the same problem on my XF9005. Even though WiFi could easily go up to 200Mbit/s on IPerf tests, streaming from the Plex server was capped at 75/80Mbit/s.
I could not understand why until I figured that the main difference could have been that the Plex App was using encryption.
I told the App to use insecure connection when on the same network of the server and now I can watch 4K HDR content with high bitrate:
Update: I noticed that the latest versions of server and client use HTTPs even if you allow insecure connections on the client. My XF9005 caps at 60Mbit/s, probably due to forced stronger, and more expensive, encryption. To make this work you have to disable secure connection server side too. Which might not be ideal if you plan to use your server from the Internet. For me it’s not a big deal as I access my server form outside my network using a VPN. If there is a way to disable secure connection only for the internal network, server side, I didn’t find it.
Are you using display mode Original or Letterbox? When i use Letterbox on my tv with 4k media, it seems it triggers downscaling to 1080p on the app side (not on server) and i get buffering every few seconds, when i use original, theres no buffering but my 4k videos get cropped.
