My X900F no longer detects the HDR signal within the app on my TV for certain files. This wasn’t an issue before as these same files played in HDR previously. If I play these same exact files on my Nvidia SHIELD through the Plex app within that product, then my TV detects & plays the HDR signal, but playing said files through the TV app only gives me the SDR signal. Again, some play HDR just fine, while others won’t.
To make sure it wasn’t an issue with my TV itself, I did a hard reset. I then checked other apps, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Netflix, etc., etc., and my TV detected & played the HDR signal just fine. Then I deleted the plex app, reinstalled it, played the files again, and still no HDR signal. It’s not the files that are the problem since they play in HDR just fine on the Nvidia SHIELD.
What else can I do? Or check? any help would be greatly appreciated.
I noticed this morning that it’s also no longer playing Dolby ATMOS either, the same files still work on the Nvidia SHIELD, both HDR & ATMOS, but not on the plex app for the X900F… maybe it’s the latest update that you guys rolled out.
I’ve used both the new player & the old one… it’s the same issue… here are 2 of the files that I’m having problems with so far: Solo: A Star Wars Movie & MI6: Fallout.
X900F Native TV app: neither plays in HDR
X900F: Kodi app w/Plex plug-in: both play in HDR
Nvidia SHIELD: both play in HDR
Nvidia SHIELD: Kodi app w/Plex plug-in: both play in HDR
This is what leads me to believe that the issue is with the native TV app, but I’m not entirely sure. Both my native app & my SHIELD app are running “Current Version 7.25.1.14216” both were updated on 11/28/19…
My SHIELD has yet to update its “media server” an option I can’t find on the X900F. I suppose that’s due to the SHIELD having a built-in server for Plex specifically. I’ve since turned off auto-updates. Anyways, the version of the “media server” currently running on the SHIELD is 1.18.2.2079 (smb)
The version that’s running on my computer (where both the native TV app & the SHIELD are linked to) is Version 1.18.2.2058 and there are currently no available updates for this version as it’s registering that it’s up to date when I click on “check for updates”. From where I’m sitting it has to be the native app that’s causing the issue…
I don’t know if there’s anything else that I can check, I’d be more than happy to. It’s as if it’s not transcoding the metadata for some reason on the TV.
I haven’t changed any settings at all. From the PMP on my computer
Direct Play: Enabled
Direct Streaming: Enabled
Hardware Decoding: Enabled
But aside from those two movies, I just discovered that the entire Captain America Trilogy is also giving me the no HDR option as well, but they seem to bring along a new problem in that those movies say “This server is not powerful enough to convert video” when I play them on the native TV app. No issue at all on my SHIELD. No other movies do this.
On the native TV app, I just checked the movies F8 of the Furious, Aquaman, Justice League, BvS, Bourne Ultimatum, and a slew of other 4K titles & I get the HDR signal… there are some shenanigans afoot with whatever this update did.
PMP is a plex client, not the server. Those settings are irrelevant to your TV. In fact the TV client settings are irrelevant if the file is transcoding. While you are playing one of the files, bring up your server dashboard in a web browser and actually confirm the file is Direct Playing, audio and video.
Okay, so when I checked this on the server dashboard within my web browser, this is what I get.
None of these titles are playing HDR when I play them on the native app on my X900F
Solo: A Star Wars Movie: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) -> 4K(H.264)— Transcode
MI6: Fallout: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) -> 4K(H.264)— Transcode
Cpt. America Civil War: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) -> 4K(H.264)— Transcode
These titles along with the multitude of others that I checked are getting HDR when I play them on the native app on my X900F
Aquaman: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) -> Direct Stream
Cpt. Marvel: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) -> Direct Stream
Now, when I go to play all 5 of these movies on the app on my SHIELD, they all play HDR just fine and from the server dashboard on my web browser it reads
Solo: A Star Wars Movie: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) -> Direct Play
MI6: Fallout: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) -> Direct Play
Cpt. America Civil War: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) -> Direct Play
Aquaman: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) -> Direct Play
Cpt. Marvel: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) -> Direct Play
Hopefully, this is an easy fix. But, I don’t know what I can do from my end to fix this. I haven’t changed anything whatsoever on my X900F. So I don’t understand how the same exact file types can Direct Stream while the others can’t/won’t and are transcoding to H.264 on my android TV, while on my SHIELD they all work perfectly fine and they Direct Play (not sure why it says Play instead of Stream, but whatever it works the way it’s supposed to).
