Sorry to quit Plex but had enough

Used Plex for a couple of years, even bought a yearly Plex Pass but had enough of crashes, fast forward lockups and slow GUI on the PS4 since late last year - I have now cancelled the Pass and moving on to Emby with a Nvidia Shield - sorry Plex but its not what it was, I don’t mind paying but I’m not paying for very buggy software, hence cancelling the Pass.

I do find it quite funny that you complain about the PS4 app, however, now you’re moving on to Emby with a Nvidia Shield. Have you tried Plex on the Shield?

Anyway, farewell and keep on keepin’ on.

I recently purchased a Shield TV Pro for use as a Plex server after reading many great reviews. However, I find that it isn’t working well. Like all platforms, the EPG on the Shield has significant update problems. I get about one day of good guide data then many channels list “Unknown Airing” and won’t correct unless I do a manual update of the EPG data. On Ubuntu I was able to by-pass the problem using Zap2XML but that doesn’t work on android and I haven’t been able to find any alternative solution.

My biggest complaint is a lack of response from Plex regarding any of the issues. I too am exploring Emby on the Shield, even though it lacks much of the functionality of Plex. It does, at least, get an accurate TV Guide listing.

True that.

What functionality do you find it lacks?

In my experience I’ve found it has far more functionality than Plex. To name a few:

  • Cloud user authentication (which Plex has) and local user authentication (which Plex lacks)
  • Speaking of user authentication: LDAP support (with plugin)
  • And speaking of which: PLUGINS ( Plex is actively removing plugin support from clients and will soon remove them from the server altogether)
  • Ability to manage your server from pretty much any client, not just the web client like Plex.
  • Ability to give as much or as little control over the DVR to users, including letting them schedule recordings, start recordings, delete recordings.
  • Ability to have multiple admin-level accounts

I use the commercial removal function of the DVR which Emby lacks right now. I also am having some playback issues on DVR recordings (stops in the middle of a program.) Also doesn’t seem to track position with playback allowing you to stop and resume at a later time.

Due to the Plex problems on a PS4Pro, I looked into alternatives and found Emby, I run a server for all my media so will use the Shield as a client, what hooked me on Emby was the fact that it has a shuffle/play function for all my music videos, tested and works very well, have 10 sub-folders in a dash folder to select era of music (ex-dj), Emby has a much more fluid and responsive GUI than Plex IMO, only received my Shield today so setting it up on the weekend, got my Emby Database Set and am using the client connection on my IPhone and IPad at the moment, I will keep the Plex server running as well as my teenage kids have XBox, I do like Plex but not on the PS4

Regards

Nigel

To add a few more…the things that swayed me.

Incredibly fast server.

Multi-versions.

Built in Trakt.

An LG TV client that’s a far better experience than even a Shield.

No Plex dance.

Watched/resume status stored in .nfo files next to the media files… So even after a catastrophic OS drive failure it’s not that catastrophic even without trakt.

Server settings auto backup.

More or less identical UI on all clients and more importantly that UI looks nothing like UNO.

you’re right, Plex is a dream on the Shield, my bad, was having a rough day and took it out on some down time watching my Plex on the PS4 Pro which kept dropping out - On the Shield it’s
super smooth AND I can shuffle my 3000 music videos in different era’s, sorry Plex, have been an idiot when it was the (now defunct) PS4 - Plex and Shield all the way, reinstating my Plex Pass

Plex is happy to take our money but if u need help your out of luck. How is this right? I have questions and problems but am feeling left in the wind . Bs

From your profile it appears that all but one of your questions were resolved.

I know it’s confusing but it’s also helpful if you find the right section of the forum to post (eg for help with a Plex app start here https://forums.plex.tv/c/plex-players and then select a subcategory such as computer, streaming device, mobile device, or smart tv), click on “new topic” and then tag by specific client and post your question.)

This for example New update and had to rebuild Plex, now there two database and nothing works right.. help please window 10 and had to rebuild Plex, now everything looks for old puter.. but sometimes it can find the new one prop

Should have been posted here:

https://forums.plex.tv/c/plex-media-server/computers

In the server section of the forums and then tagged with “windows”

Believe me I know it’s confusing so I hope you’ll find this helpful.

I put my questions in Plex Media Server: NAS & Devices: Server-nvidia-shield with complete server information and logs and still can’t get responses.

Where did I say that posting in the correct place/way would guarantee a response? I believe the words I used were “it’s also helpful”.

Fair enough. But I’d still like to know how to get an answer from plex…:slightly_smiling_face:

Same here. I have paid monthly and now I need support from the plex team and no one to help. I had enough I will cancel it. Rubbish thing

Mmm… one post 16 hours to ago. No, Plex probably isn’t for you then… on the other hand, your post was on my list to answer later today (I’m not with Plex but sometimes I can get people pointed in the right direction…)

Thanks for your reply. Can you help me? I purchased monthly pass. I have plex app on my LG smart tv. What else do I need to make it work? Plex team doesn’t help

Plex has several pieces to make everything work, even more so for Live TV and DVR.

You will need to install Plex Media Server on a computer; the computer must be on and awake whenever you use any Plex app (say on your LG Smart TV).

https://support.plex.tv/articles/200264746-quick-start-step-by-step-guides/

(Note: if you don’t have any local media to add to your Plex Server, you can skip the second part of Step 3).

You will need a TV tuner of some sort, see:

https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877427-supported-dvr-tuners-and-antennas/

You will need to set up the DVR on your Plex Media Server, see:

https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877347-live-tv-dvr/

You will need to connect your TV to your Plex Server by using the same Plex user account on both the Plex Media Server and your Plex apps.

Once everything is set up, you should be able to set up recordings on your Plex Media Server and view Live TV and recordings on your TV.

bought a plex pass for a year was so excited to put things on my computer to my smart tv. Never got it to work, not once. it crashed it wouldn’t recognize my tv and it would not load my movies. I switched to free Jellyfin and it worked first try and its free. Plexx support could not help me. thanks but no thanks I am happy now

So…you just joined the forums 16 hours ago, this was your first and only post so far, and you just came here to post this? Never came to ask for any help with whatever problems you were having? Sound like a troll to me…
