Sort Collections Differently than Library

Doesn’t handle prequels though, it’d be nice to set a custom order, such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe in storyline order

Sort title?

That will apply to both the main library view as well as within the collection though, won’t it?

That is along the lines of what I (and others) are looking for, however there are only two options: Alphabetical and Release Date.

It would be very helpful to be able to have a custom sort without messing up the Alphabetized Order of the “All Movies” list. The Marvel Universe, for example, the movies weren’t released in chronological order. Or Star Wars. Or Jesse Stone. Etc.

So, the ability to sort a collection by release date or alphabetical order doesn’t solve the problem.

I would think adding some kind of “collection sort” field might solve the problem, maybe(??). That way, movies can be sorted one way, such as a custom order (chronological, for example) in a collection, but maintain its alphabetic sort in the “All Movies” view.

so what you describe would be 2 separate sort titles… one applied in regular library view and one applied when displaying the collection?

Yes. I think that would be a simple way to resolve the problem. Just a suggestion. I’m no expert in how Plex handles its database or if that would mess anything else up.

The way I envision that working is for a “Collection Sort” field, I could put a simple number in that field. (1, 2, 3…). That would be a quick and easy way for me to force the collection to sort the titles in the exact order I want it to. Or in the same field, I could just append a number in front of the title, or something. Some way to force it to sort precisely how I want it to without messing up the display name of the movie title or affecting the “All Movies” view.

Collections can be edited to sort by release or alphabetical.

I think what would work for most people is a 3rd ‘custom’ sort criteria for collections.

So when you go into the STAR WARS collection, you can sort by release, by alpha, or by a custom/static order (like a static playlist).

In the mean time, the easiest way to obtain custom sorts within a collection is to edit the SORT TITLE of each movie within the collection (this doesn’t affect the the display title), and sort by alpha.

example star wars by timeline order

(note movies only)
episode 1 = sort order “Star Wars 1”
episode 2 = sort order “Star Wars 2”
episode 3 = sort order “Star Wars 3”
solo = sort order “Star Wars 4”
rogue 1 = sort order “Star Wars 5”
episode 4 = sort order “Star Wars 6”

and so on

works for me.

movie sort order field = YOUR own personal sort field.

That would certainly do it, but that would also affect how the movie is displayed in the library (All Movies) view. The idea is to keep them separate.

yes I said this was a work around.

Essentially you want a sort order and a separate collection sort order.

So you can have movies displayed outside the collection in alpha, and within the collection as whatever.

Personally, I prefer to have series movies grouped together inside or outside the collection.

While noted it makes it slightly more difficult to find the movies with a different title, if one understands that rogue one is within star wars, then they can just as easily navigate to S instead of R.

Then they can also see all the other star wars movies together, in whatever sort order you defined for yourself.
