Source for TV Show Content Rating

Please could someone tell which provider is being used for content rating by the Plex agent?

edit: I updated TMDB with the content rating for the UK and Plex isn’t pulling it through…

Which agent are you using for your library – do you mean the Plex TV Series agent when you write “the Plex agent”?

You can configure the preferred rating source in each library’s advanced options ( > Manage Library > Edit...Advanced > Rating Source) – you can currently pick from TMDb and TVDb; there’s a feature suggestion asking to add IMDb as well. On my setup there’s also an icon related to the rating source next to the show’s rating.

Sorry, yes, I meant Plex TV Series agent.

I did select TMDB as the rating source but it’s still not pulling the content ratings. I think that setting is for the user ratings (user score on TMDB).

Edit: it is the content rating that is currently wrong on some shows, I know I can manually edit in Plex but I have also updated the content rating in TMDB so should now be automated.

If you mean the content rating, as in the age group it is appropriate for, AFAIK it is TheMovieDB and it is based on the Certification Country in the advanced library settings. It does take 24-48 hours for us to get updates and a refresh of metadata for show would be needed.

This topic is worth reading for TV certifications from TMDB as they only support some countries …

I believe plex defaults to US certification if you select a country in your plex setup which TMDB don’t support or if none exist on TMDB but I’m open to correction on that.

@BigWheel
Are you saying if the edit to TMDB is made, it’ll take Plex 24 to 48 hours to pick that up?

@anon5074910
All good on that front. My settings are for UK and TMDB supports that.

yes that is what i mean

@BigWheel @drzoidberg33 been meaning to ask this for a while and this thread seems like a good opportunity.

With regard to TV certification ratings for episodes, how are they handled when TMDB is used as a overall rating source ?

Using UK certification as an example for Hawkeye it has a 12 certification at the show level but all episodes are TV-14. I’m guessing the episodes are failing back to the default US certification but would it not be better to fall back to the overall show certification ?

@anon5074910 I agree, it should default to the overall show content rating.
@BigWheel so even if I edit something in TMDb right now and do a refresh metadata it won’t pick that edit up for a further 24 hours? Surely the refresh is asking TMDB for the latest?

This confuses many. When you do a metadata refresh your local plex server does a refresh against a backbone cache which plex manage themselves. It does not query the metadata sources (TMDB, TVDB etc… ) directly itself. When an update is made to TMDB as an example it takes approx 24-48 hrs for this change to make it to the plex cache.

Gotcha. I’ll be patient then lol

I have to say though that caching, whilst makes sense to a degree when the new plex agents are being pushed to being used and there is a lag of that long, it’s far from ideal. For example, I am fairly new to Plex and initially wanted to use the nfos I have used for Kodi in the past as they already have the certifications for movies and I know that TMDB is missing a hell of a lot for the UK certifications. If I transfer to the new plex agent, it’ll take me hours of manually updating TMDB (as suggested by a senior member here) and then a further possibly 48 hours before Plex actually has the correct certs.

I’ll be honest a 48hrs wait is no big deal for me and you could always just edit the show directly in plex itself if you want it right away.

If I recall, it was about 700+ movies missing the certs, that’s a lot of manual changes…

Edit: I ended up using the XMBCmoviesNFOimporter thing :slight_smile:

2nd Edit: IMDB has the majority of the certs, which is where the nfos were created from in the 1st place but obviously the plex agent for movies doesn’t use that provider…

The old agents did the same and also took time to cache. If we don’t we would kill TMDb, TVDB servers quickly

Right, I’ve been adding Ireland certifications along with other things on TMDB for a while now which had a lot less than UK did :blush:

LOL, yes I suspect bit by bit works to an extent but I needed to get back up and running post not having Kodi do the library management and allow Plex to do it in the background.

Each to their own I suppose.

FYI… I see the GB certification for Yellowstone you added (https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/73586-yellowstone/changes) has made its way to plex now with the show changing from the wrong G certification to the correct 15. As predicted it arrived within the 48 hour window :slight_smile:

That’s cool however, I’ve now been banned from TMDB…
