Specials not showing in Plex even after I check against www.thetvdb.com for V (1983/4)

Server Version#: 4.30.2
Player Version#: ** 4.30.2**

I am trying to add V - The Original Mini Series and V - The FInal Battle to my Plex set up running on a Synology DS218 with the latest version of Plex.

I have tried so many variants and re-scans of the Plex library but the season 00 is just not showing up.

Here is the special on thetvdb:-
http://www.thetvdb.com/series/v/seasons/dvd/0

Attached are the files and folders (I’ve tried with and without the release year in brackets after V).

 Directory of Q:\V (1983)\Specials

08/07/2020 12:54 <DIR> .
08/07/2020 12:53 <DIR> ..
08/07/2020 08:25 940,042,980 V (1983) - S00E01 - The Original Miniseries (1).mp4
08/07/2020 09:17 699,418,175 V (1983) - S00E02 - The Original Miniseries (2).mp4
08/07/2020 11:06 763,016,565 V (1984) - S00E03 - The Final Battle (1).mp4
08/07/2020 12:33 767,502,252 V (1984) - S00E04 - The Final Battle (2).mp4

I am not sure what I am doing wrong, especially with comparing the look up with the source.

Please help

Thanks!!!

As you’re using mp4 files… did you already check those files for embedded metadata that might conflict with the given naming (title tag)?

Thanks for the pointer - these files are freshly ripped from DVD originals using Handbrake.

The metadata is empty on all files, except for the field “Encoded by”.

I have confirmed this by looking in the “Media information” window on VLC and also on the file properties.

I’ve also tried changing the directory for the files from:-

Q:\V (1983)\Specials

to

Q:\V (1983)\Season 00

…and did a re-scan. Still no dice :frowning:

hmm… maybe it’s the Mac version of Handbrake that also adds the title of the source to the embedded metadata of the video (or there’s simply been no title in that source of yours).

Do you have other episodes of that show that show up properly?
If that’s all the episodes you got for V… have you checked if they show up somewhere else as mismatched duplicates for another show? (even though you should see some change to the “recently added” hub).

I was worth checking that, thanks!

V is nowhere to be seen in Plex web GUI, in the search, recently added, the library itself… nowhere.

Have I matched up the filename and folder structure correctly as per the www.thetvdb.com web site?

If there’s other episodes that properly show up as “V” in your library that’ll rule out a mismatch. If those specials are all the episodes you want to add and they’re not showing, Plex might have mismatched them. In that case they could show as “something else” or be grouped into an existing show of yours (showing as duplicates of the existing episodes of that show). So you won’t find them as “V” in your recently added hub.

I just added a dummy file with the given name to a playground library of mine.
That file loaded just fine and was immediately recognized as the 1983 version of “V” – all I subsequently had to do was to switch the show order to “DVD order”.

Thanks for doing that.

The four files are literally not showing up anywhere at all in Plex :frowning:

OK, so I went back a stage and removed the whole library from Plex, re-added the library using the exact same directory location for the media and the V files showed up correctly…

Bangs head against wall

Thanks for your help  I resorted to armageddon

That’s great
Could it be you previously had the library set to be a movie or other video type library? That’d explain why the files were ignored for good…

Heh

No, it was set to TV Shows etc but I did notice the “last update was 4 hours ago”… which is odd, considering I was hammering the update library button every 10 minutes
