Trying to add a folder to a Library without success

Server Version#:
Player Version#:
I have a Library set up at I:\aaaNew F Drive\My F Drive TV\V (1984). .This item loaded smoothly without incident as a separate show. I then tried to add I:\aaaNew F Drive\My F Drive TV\V (1983) - The Mini Series. It did not load at all. Instead it loaded into the first folder as an extra season. I have tried renaming the files in every way I could think of, but nothing helped. It either loaded into the V (1984) folder or refused to load at all. I also loaded V - The Final Battle. It correctly loaded as an individual show. What exactly am I doing wrong?
I:\aaaNew F drive\My F Drive TV\V - The original Series (1984-85)…this loaded and named itself "V (1984) "
vv3
vv1

I:\aaaNew F drive\My F DriveTV\TV (1983) The Mini Series…loaded itself as a second season of “V (1984)”vv2
vv4

I’m really struggling with the entire PLEX system and don’t know how to find the “how to” files to help me.

The year should always be after the complete title. So rather than
V (1983) - The Mini Series
It should be
"V - The Mini Series (1983)"

If that still doesn’t work, you might try naming the folder to match the way thetvdb.com has it titled, to help Plex find the right match:
"V 1983 (Part 1 and 2)"

https://thetvdb.com/movies/v

As for finding the Help files, click on your avatar at the top right of the Plex Web screen, and click “Help” in the dropdown menu:

Thanks, beckfield, for your comments. I tried both of your suggestions and this folder will still not load. I used “V - The Mini Series (1983) s00e01.mkv.” It still shows up the in the V (1984) library as a Special season in addition to the two correct regular seasons.

Hmm, as I read the help page for TV shows (I don’t have much of a TV library), it says that you should always use “season 1” for miniseries. “Season 0” is for specials related to a series.

So try “V - The Mini Series (1983) s01e01.mkv” and see what happens.

Hi, beckfield. I tried your suggestion and it did/didn’t work, i.e. the folder disappeared from the incorrect library folder, but it also just disappeared altogether! It doesn’t appear in PLEX anywhere. Now what?

Can you screenshot the “Add Folders” tab in the Edit Library dialog?

If You check the TVDB, where Plex gets its data, the mini-series are considered as “Specials” for the show.

The mini-series that @beckfield linked to is classified as a movie. As far as I know, Plex doesn’t use any of the movie data from tvdb in either a movies or tv library.

Good catch. Seems like TVDB has a problem, if they’re classifying the same show in two ways.

Unlike the TVDB , theMovieDB has the miniseries listed as separate show which is what you seem to want. https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/14141-v

If you are tying to get them to be listed as separate shows, #1. fix the naming so it is S01E01 then they will probably still be combined as dupilcate episode 1&2… so #2 split them apart in the options menu , which will make them two separate show listings and then #3 do fix match and choose search options and use TheMovieDB as the agent for the one with two episodes

( you could also just split apart and enter(copy paste) the metadata in manually since it is only two episodes would be pretty quick)

The V - Mini Series (1983) folder is in the “My F Drive TV” folder

Hi, BigWheel. Thanks for your comment. Yes, I do want the 2 parts of the Mini Series as a separate folder, but when I label the 2 episodes as “s00e01” and “s00e02”, they appear as a “Specials” folder in the regular program folder.

special add 1

If I label them as “s01e01” and “s01e02” then they add themselves into the regular program folder as second copies of episodes 1 and 2.

The Options Menu doesn’t give me the option of splitting them as you suggest.

It is in the options menu on the page for the show as a whole, not for the individual seasons or episode

HOORAY! I have been trying everything I could think of and got so many wrong results that I was ready to accept the “Specials” folder solution, but you, sir, have solved my dilemma. And this is odd, because the last installment of the 2009 remake was a stand-alone folder that loaded without any incident. That’s why I followed the file naming format exactly for this Mini-Series…only it hasn’t worked. I would never have found out how to do the “work around” that you have lead me to. I can’t thank you enough!!!

NOTE Now what? I just reopened PLEX and my fix as above had disappeared and the Mini-Series was back in the main program file as the “Specials” file and the separate folder I created by splitting this folder out and rematching using the MovieDB. Before that changed I had BOTH the separate folder AND the “Specials” file in the program folder! What now? Did I do something incorrectly?

Please do this with just the mini series V (1983)

then do the split apart thing again

Good morning, BigWheel. In one of my topic replies I was referred to something call “The Plex Dance” posted by PlexInfo (Plex Employee) on 6/17/17 and citing “The purpose of this is to remove all cached metadata and xml data for an item that Plex usually keeps. This helps when you want to “start from scratch” for particular item.” I ran this procedure. Now not only do I have the Mini Series folder back in the main program folder, but I also have the psot-season Final Battle in there, too! It originally loaded as a separate folder as I intended.

And, another oddity is that The Final Battle has 3 episodes (not showing). My file naming is below:

v test 2

What now, please?

did you do it to only V(1983) like I said?

I’m not clear why you give them the 00 season number if you want them as season 1 of their own show. that will always put them in a specials season.

also this. V.s00e01.The Original Mini Series.part 1.1983.mkv
should be `V (1983) s01e01 The Original Mini Series.mkv

You need to name the files and folder accordingly, especially if its being matched with TVDB:

V (1983)/Specials/V S00E01 The Original Mini Series Part 1.mkv
V (1983)/Specials/V S00E02 The Original Mini Series Part 2.mkv
V (1983)/Specials/V S00E03 V The Final Battle (1).mkv
V (1983)/Specials/V S00E04 V The Final Battle (1).mkv
V (1983)/Specials/V S00E05 V The Final Battle (1).mkv

I don’t know why people are so dense when it comes to just following the rules.

you should read what he is trying to do instead of calling people names

Yes, I did as you directed and it worked as I noted earlier. But, upon reopening PLEX, all had been undone and I had one folder with the regular season + the mini series as “special” and the Final Battle as a separate folder. I must have messed that up somehow, so I’ve now changed The Final Battle to your numbering and I’ve gotten a new configuration:

I’m really struggling to understand what’s happening here. Shouldn’t this renaming have produced a separate folder for The Final Battle?

So sorry to be “so dense.” I’m just a senior non-techie looking for some help. I want to have the Mini Series, the regular series, and the Final Battle episodes all as separate folders. Luckily BigWheel is patiently offering helpful guidance.
