Split 3D movies play same version on Xbox and share progress

Server Version#: 1.29.2.6364
Player Version#: Xbox

I’ve been backing up my 3D blurays recently and most have been fine. With one film I added the 3D version and it merged it with the 2D version on the server. I split the files and renamed one “film 3D” and the other is just named “film”, which matches the file names.

When playing back on my Xbox (plugged into my 3DTV) I select the 3D SBS version and it plays the 2D version. I noticed progress also synchs between the two files. When I play the film on my PC through the dashboard the 3D version plays the 3D file and the 2D version plays the 2D files (progress still synchs but I think that’s a known issue).

Other 2D\3D films I have tried work fine on my Xbox. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Try removing the files from your library, then scan the library. Then rename the files using the editions tag and place them back into your library and rescan.

With a little luck that should keep them separated and show progress for each file independently.

Splitting does not unmatch, so they still share the same id. You’ll need to either unmatch one and lose the metadata or switch to versions to keep track of both.

Thanks for your reply. Although it didn’t fix the issue, which appears to be an encoding issue, I learned a little bit more.

The only thing that causes Plex to incorrectly group files together is their naming.

File encoding has nothing to do with that.

I wonder if you followed all of the steps I laid out?

  1. Remove the files from your library
  2. Scan the library
  3. Rename the files as outlined previously
  4. Place the files back into the library
  5. Scan the library again (if not automatic)

I did all that and it was very useful. I then deleted the 2D version from the server and it still played in 2D on Xbox and 3D on PC, which lead me to believe it was an encoding issue rather than a grouping issue. I’ve now been able to re-encode the file in Handbrake and fixed it.

Ah OK, now I understand what you were saying.

I’m glad you were able to fix the issue.

Happy Plexing!
