"Split Apart" option in Plex Media Server (WD NAS) 1.23.6.4881?

Server Version#: 1.23.6.4881
Player Version#: 4.59.2

Adding the Harry Potter movies (I own the original discs) for my kids. Seems the Deathly Hallows movies are combining into one. When I go to Edit > Info it shows the separate files, though hovering over the poster doesn’t show the indicator (“2”) that there are merged items. Also, the More ("…") menu doesn’t show the Split Apart option. Tried to Unmatch; no help. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance!

This probably happened because the naming of the files is in line with the “movie split across different files” schema (e.g. ending with " - pt1", " - pt2").
Are both movies in their own top-level folder? If I remember correctly, that’s one of the prerequisites to split an item.

@tom80H thanks for the quick response. Yes, the naming of the movies definitely subjected them to the initial merge:

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1.mkv
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.mkv

I can understand and expected the initial merge, but I’ve never had an issue with manually splitting apart items before, even when they are in the same folder, which they are (“Movies”). Is the prerequisite to have movies in their own top-level folder something recent? I also find it odd that the “2” merge indicator on the top left of the poster isn’t there. Could that be an indication of a potential issue?

@tom80H if it helps to know, I’m almost positive I also had to (and was able to) manually split Deadpool and Deadpool 2 (those ones were definitely NOT for the kids! :grinning:) when they were initially merged after they were added to the same “Movies” folder.

There’s actually no need to have them in different folders.
I have a single movie w/ multiple (quality) versions in my library – both files are in the same folder and I can split them fine.

The issue at hand is a different one.
Those files are not treated as different versions but different parts of the same file.
While different versions gives you the option to pick which file to play (or to split them apart), the multi-part items are considered to be part of the same file.

Your best shot will probably be to remove one of the items from your media folder and rename it.
e…g using a , as the separator before the “part 1” and “part 2” (or leave it out). It’s just that the - is used as part of the pattern to identify multi-part items.

@tom80H perfect! I removed the files from the folder, renamed them:

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 1.mkv
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2.mkv

re-added them to the folder and it’s all good. Thanks for the tip!
