SRT Subtiles in LG WebOS start buffering on 4K HDR Movie with any audio type

Hi all, seems to be a known and commented on issue but no comment from plex/development so im making some noise.

I have a 4k HDR movie.

I play it without SRT subtitles, plays fine
I enable SRT subtitles, it starts transcoding and buffers and stutters - however it is not burning the subtitles it, it is displaying them dynamically (respond to interface coming up, subtitles move around the screen and adjust)

This is a bug in LG WebOS Plex Media Player - When is this going to be fixed?

Some people ahve reported that roll back the server version fixed the issue. I do not have the old packages for my qnap, and intro detected is too rad.

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252
Player Version#: Latest LG WebOS

SRT subtitles + transcoded audio result in transcoded video with the Plex app on LG & Samsung TVs.

Can you choose an alternate audio track that does not transcode (DD 5.1 vs TrueHD, etc)?

DD 5.1 results in transcoding

Even though my TV is passing it through.

it actually says direct play in the dashboard
chrome_glcb13IhQO

But then console log shows

and mad stuttering.

If i disable SRT, no stuttering/buffering, and no transcoding log messages.

EDIT: Im not actually sure its transcoding. im runnning this on a QNAP, it wouldnt have the cpu capacity to transcode the video and only cause the intermittant buffiering that its doing. But its certainly doing something weird that changes the experience from watching without buffer to buffering every 10 to 60 seconds.

It is not transcoding, otherwise it would show as such on the Dashboard.

You need to remux the movie. See this thread:

Please provide the entire PMS log.

Thanks for the responses.

I’ve remuxed it but am not at home to test it. Will test this evening.

For logs, I can only find the console screen which is a realtime view. Where can I get the full log from?

I’m running on a qnap so web interface preferred, otherwise I need to dig in to the filesystem which is another hurdle I haven’t yet jumped!

Go up one to Troubleshooting. Then “Download logs”.

Hi all! Apologies for the delayed update.

Covid lockdowns making life difficult here.

No luck with the remuxing unfortunately (i ran it through the latest version of MKVToolNix, not sure if i need to do anything special other than run it through it)

Please see attached server logs. Let me know if any other log files can be of help.

Oh, for what it’s worth. XPLAY has no issue playing the file. Even with True HD audio selected.

Hi,
How were you able to download XPLAY?

The LG app store comes up with nothing when I search for it…

I have the same exact problem, it’s a Plex bug, the same movie can be played without any transcoding using the LG SmartShare app, but through Plex, even if it reports that direct play is being used, the HDD is used at 100% whenever internal subtitles are selected. If the subtitle is selected through the search function of the LG Plex app, then everything works.

Good morning all,

I have the same problem on my LG SK8000PLB tv.

Removing the SRT subtitles (in my case PGS) allows trouble-free playback and without transcoding.

The problem is either with plexserver or with the Plex LG app.

Would it be possible to have the opinion of a member of the plex team on the subject?

Thank you

The LG app does not support PGS subtitles so those always have to be burned into your video. If your server isn’t powerful enough to handle this, then you will get buffering. This is a limitation of your server.

This uses srt subtitles which does not need to be transcoded.

Hi mate! I downloaded x-play a long time ago. It must have been removed from the store.

I suspect epoxy is having a different issue.

I am definitely having an issue with SRT subtitle. Plex reports no transcode, but still buffering issues.

Yes it’s true, I’m wrong there is transcoding from a PGS but I’ve never had a buffering problem to the point that the movie doesn’t start.

As for the server, I don’t risk having any problem since I have been running for 4 years on an HP DL380 G8 with two XeonE5-2630 at 2.30GHz and 64GB of ram with a 10Gb 530FLR network card with Plex, Jdownloader and MKVtoolnix the rest run on another server.

This is the first time that I have this problem.

But good for more security, I will put subtitles SRT

In my case, I have a synology NAS 1520+ that’s capable of HW transcoding with no issues.
And I want the video and audio to transcode to a LG WebOS TV. And that works fine. But if I enable subtitles (SRT), it doesn’t play.
Is it possible to have both video/audio transcoding, but the srt to only be sent to the webos client?

I really want to have video hw transcoding, audio transcoding + srt subtitles (no burning into) working

Same problem here.

I have the same problem with SRT subtitels. When using the Plex App on my LG C9 it always buffers as if it is transcoding, but in the activity tap it says direc play and direc stream. This problem is now there for several months so I bought a Nvidia Shield TV. Sadly it isn’t perfect either. The Shield TV can’t play E-AC3 Audio without stutering. I don’t know if it is the only limitation but I will see. I WIll probably try the kodi app with the kodi addon for plex. I heard a lot of good things about this combination.

It says that it is direct playing on the dashboard but the console shows some transcoding. Stuttering in videos that are easily transcoded for other devices. I reckon that the fact that it is registered as “direct play” doesn’t even pull the resources for it to transcode optimally.

I have the exact same problem. For months! Won’t this get a fix ever?

It’s not just on 4K videos either.
