Subtitles BUG on LG WebOS systems

Hello all,

I am currently facing an issue mainly with 4K movies, subtitles and transcoding in LG TVs.

  • When I have subtitles on SRT and original quality = The video directly doesn’t work and plex gives an error:
  • When I have subtitles on SRT and reduced quality = The video plays, but with some sort of buffering and lagg (low FPS) as if I was seeing photos (Not an issue of my network)
  • When I have subtitles off and reduced quality = Everything works
  • When I have subtitles on SRT and original quality = Everything works.

Here you can have an XML of one of the files I was currently trying to reproduce and showing those issues:

Kind regards

Can anyone from Plex team look into this issue?

Subtitles needs to be burnt in if video or audio is transcoded with enabled any subtitles. Its the limitation of LG player.

Thats fine, if it would work, but as I wrote, it is just messing around, and breaking up the stream

Your server’s CPU is probably not powerful enough to handle subs burn in smoothly.

I have a p2000 very much capable of that transcoding and 12 core CPU
Also if that would be the issue, then when I have subtitles off and reduced quality wouldn’t work either.
And just to finish with, Plex is giving errors
This is just happening with LG, on other clients just working fine

As I said before, It’s LG limitation. Just search “LG buffering,…” and you will find answers

Burning in subtitles is CPU single threaded operation so a number of cores or your GPU don’t really matter

LOL, I have now seen tons of post reporting issues with LG, but one taking care of those…
What exactly is an LG limitation? Up to what I know LG supports H265 codecs, and SRT subtitles, why a 12mbps stream would be limited by LG? Not saying its not true what you are stating, but need a bit of more info, about why LG is limited, to plex.
About my CPU, I checked yesterday when running the tests, and none of my CPUs were hitting 100%, so I guess that is neither the issue

Something must have changed… LG WebOS TV’s have always been able to direct play, and now it happens many times that it will transcode (burn the SRT for no reason) and starts buffering every 10 seconds…

Might be incompatible audio track (TrueHD or DTS). Keep in mind that even audio track transcoding with subtitles enabled results in burn in subtitles and video transcoding.

No, audio is Direct Play. It seems that suddenly it ‘transcodes’ the container, MKV->MPEGTS. And enabling SRT causes it to be burned in.

I am 100% sure that exactly the same audo/video/subtitle combination was able to be Direct Played before on WebOS, and now no longer is (for multiple clients). They all have Direct Play/Stream enabled in their settings and subtitle burn is set to ‘only image formats’.

Even if it needs to transcode it or not, it is not working as it should, as per the issues I reported.
Now if it is transcoding and there is no need to do it, then thats another issue to add into the multiples I have seen

I’m having the same/a similar issue with subs. I reported it HERE

I can confirm it was audio settings .I changed from truehd to ac3 now i no loger get playback error and subtitles works.
