Hello!
I have a series whose episodes are in mkv (x264) and embedded srt files.
Now during playback (direct play) in the Android app and activated subtitles (are not burned in), not all subtitle lines are displayed. If I activate “Always burn in subtitles”, all lines are displayed.
The subtitles are also displayed in the web player without any problems.
Does anyone know the problem? Can I send logs to the developers?
Is it possible that it is the English subs which give you trouble, but the German ones play fine?
If so, then this is because the english subs are derived from Closed Captions. As such they often have several lines to be shown at the same time, or have a too short gap between the previous and its follow-up line.
This is something that the SRT decoders of certain devices cannot handle.
I have applied some automated fixes to the English sub, using Subtitle Edit.
See if they still exhibit the problematic behavior.
I haven’t changed the pre-selected fixes that much in my app.
In this particular case, the following fixes did the work:
Fix overlapping display time
Fix short gap
Remove empty line
The rest that are applied by default, like “Fix common OCR errors” and “Fix ‘- -’ → ‘…’” are only cosmetic in nature (i.e. personal preferences) and have no influence on the above issue.
Here are these which I have found useful for English
(the list changes a bit with subtitle language):
The problem was, in fact, the subtitle times. There were overlapping times. I merged overlapping times with SubtitleEdit - so two single lines became one double line. I didn’t change anything else in the subtitles.
I created a script for this that goes through all mkv files automatically. If anyone is interested …
