a shortcut to Plex Media Server.exe in that very folder above.
where is the Plex Media Server.exe is located so i can create a shortcut?
In that very folder above
I can’t tell you. I think it might be not correct, because it is global (i.e. for all Windows user accounts), while Plex server must only run inside one Windows user account.
Please use the startup methods described in my link above.
i am the only user on this PC. the file is in the startup folder and it’s on but still, Start Plex Media Server al Login is not checked.
Please reboot your computer and look again after that.
Keep in mind that autostart apps are started with a 10 second delay by default.

I’ve got the same issue. I’ve had it for months. Got a brand new PC, worked fine. Upgraded plex a few times, not sure what else, then it just stopped. WHen I go to see start up applications in Task Manager, I’ve got three PLEX entries. Doesn’t matter which one I activate, it doesn’t work. I tried putting in an entry in task Scheduler to start PLEX after boot up but that doesn’t work. Just upgraded from WIndows 10 to 11 and same thing. Any ideas?
As of now, unfortunately not really.
Problem is I cannot test it since I have no computer with Windows 11 for testing yet.
I can only recommend a manual upgrade:
- Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
- deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows
(do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.
do not use “Registry Cleaner/optimizer” software like CCleaner et al) - for safety, reboot Windows
- download the installation exe of the 64 bit server version and install it
I assume that none of you is actually running Plex as a system service, right?
Correct. I’ll give it a shot.
Ok, I got it to work. Here were the steps
- Uninstall PLEX like suggested
- Reboot
- Go to registry editor and look for PLEX Server in the following locations
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartupApproved\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartupApproved\Run
If found, delete them. I found it in several places which accounted for the multiple entries in task manager.
4. Reboot for fun
5. Reinstall Plex and set to start up on boot
6. Reboot and it worked.
Some more details if you have a 32 bit OS
